Bob Halkidis
Robert H. Halkidis (born March 5, 1966) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Playing career As a youth, Halkidis played in the 1979 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Toronto. After a junior hockey career with the London Knights in which he won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as outstanding defenceman in 1984–85, Halkidis joined the Buffalo Sabres. During his career he also played for the Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Islanders and HIFK. In 1998 Halkidis won the Finnish championship with HIFK and was very popular among fans due to his rough and uncompromising style of play. Known more as a defensive defenceman, Halkidis recorded 8 goals and 32 assists over 256 NHL games. Personal life He retired in 2001, and now runs a hockey training and coaching development business. Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets (often simply referred to as the Jackets) are a professional ice hockey team based in Columbus, Ohio. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference, and began play as an expansion team in 2000. The Blue Jackets struggled in their initial years, failing to win 30 games in a season until 2005–06. The team qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in 2009, but were swept by the Detroit Red Wings. Columbus ultimately notched their first playoff game victory in the 2014 playoffs, and won their first playoff series in the 2019 playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning, becoming the first team in NHL history to sweep a Presidents' Trophy winner in the first round. Max Kaminsky Trophy
The Max Kaminsky Trophy is awarded annually by the Ontario Hockey League to the most outstanding defenceman. The award is named in honour of Max Kaminsky, who coached the St. Catharines Teepees to the Memorial Cup in 1960 and died shortly thereafter of cancer. The winner of the Max Kaminsky Trophy is nominated for the CHL Defenceman of the Year. Prior to 1969, the Max Kaminsky Trophy was awarded to the most gentlemanly player in the league. The William Hanley Trophy is now awarded for the most sportsmanlike player in the OHL. London Knights
The London Knights are a junior ice hockey team from London, Ontario, Canada, playing in the Ontario Hockey League, one of the leagues of the Canadian Hockey League. The Knights started out in 1965 as the London Nationals but changed to their current name in 1968. The Knights have won two Memorial Cup championships. History Early days The London Nationals were granted a franchise in the OHA for the 1965–66 season under the ownership of the London Gardens arena, with the Toronto Maple Leafs controlling the team's players. Upon the collapse of the Metro Junior A League in 1963, the Leafs were left with only one sponsored OHA team, the Toronto Marlboros, with which to place their prospects. Minor Ice Hockey
Minor hockey is an umbrella term for amateur ice hockey which is played below the junior age level. Players are classified by age, with each age group playing in its own league. The rules, especially as it relates to body contact, vary from class to class. In North America, the rules are governed by the national bodies, Hockey Canada and USA Hockey, while local hockey associations administer players and leagues for their region. Many provinces and states organize regional and provincial championship tournaments, and the highest age groups in Canada and USA also participate in national championships. Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament
The Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament (french: Tournoi international de hockey pee-wee de Québec) is an annual minor ice hockey event in Quebec City. The tournament was founded in 1960 to coincide with the Quebec Winter Carnival, and give an opportunity for international competition to players less than 12 years old. The tournament raises funds for the local Patro Roc-Amadour foundation, and is mostly run by volunteers and a few staff. The event takes place each year in February at Videotron Centre, and previously spent 56 seasons at Quebec Coliseum. As of 2018, the event has showcased the talent of over 1,200 future professionals in the National Hockey League or the World Hockey Association.
