Boans was a department store chain that operated in Perth, Western Australia between from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. It was located between Wellington Street and Murray Street and had the Padbury Buildings between it and Forrest Place. The store was founded by Harry Boan and his brother Benjamin who both came to Perth in 1895 from Broken Hill in western New South Wales. Harry and another brother, Ernest, had previously established a successful drapery known as "Boan Bros. Ltd." in that town. City store The brothers arrived in Perth in mid-1895 when Harry was 34, and purchased two blocks facing Wellington Street and the Perth railway station, at the edge of a potato swamp. The properties ("V.7-8") were purchased from Woods & Co, at a price of £42 per foot of street frontage. Harry Boan
Henry ("Harry") Boan (1860–1941) was an Australian businessman and politician, who was best known for establishing the Boans department store in Perth, Western Australia. Boan was born at Jones Creek near Dunolly, Victoria on 4 November 1860. He was the son of English born Jewish parents Thomas, a miner and road contractor, and Rachel Isaacs. Thomas and Rachel had previously lived in California before coming to Australia in about 1850 in relatively poor circumstances. When Harry was about 16 he left home and worked as a messenger in Flegeltaub's Ballarat warehouse on wages of 10s. per week including lodging. He was later promoted to a position of town-traveller at £2 10s. per week but soon resigned. From here he moved between jobs in Melbourne and later Sydney, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Charters Towers including positions at 'Anthony Hordern's' and 'David Jones's'. Morley, Western Australia
Morley is a suburb of Perth, within the City of Bayswater local government area, situated approximately northeast of the Perth central business district. It contains the Galleria Shopping Centre, one of Perth's larger shopping centres. Morley bus station is located in the car park of the shopping centre. Galleria Shopping Centre (formerly known as Westfield Galleria, Centro Galleria and Galleria) is a shopping centre located in Morley, about northeast of the Perth central business district. Padbury Buildings, Perth
The Padbury Buildings was a building complex in Forrest Place in Perth, Western Australia. It was located the full length of Forrest Place between Wellington Street, Perth, Wellington Street and Murray Street, Perth, Murray Street. They were constructed in 19241925. It was a low set building adjacent to the higher Boans building, which later was demolished to make way for the Myer building. The city buildings housed a range of businesses, and associations with significant organisations as tenants at various stages. They were a part of a set of Padbury Buildings, buildings associated with William Padbury (nephew of Walter Padbury) in Western Australia. Forrest Chase
Forrest Chase is a major shopping centre in Perth, Western Australia located in Forrest Place. A Myer store serves as its main anchor and largest tenant. The centre also contains a Woolworths supermarket and other shops. The western portion of the structure sits on the site of the former Padbury Buildings on the eastern side of Forrest Place. The site also formerly contained the Perth Boans department store before it made way for the current centre in 1986. The centre was redeveloped between 2017 and 2019.
