Bluie East Two
Bluie East Two was a minor United States Army Air Forces airfield at Ikateq in eastern Greenland. It was operational from 1942 to 1947. Founding and construction After the United States assumed responsibility for the defense of Greenland in April 1941, the urgent need for establishing airfields in the area caused the Army to USAAF Captain Elliott Roosevelt performed aerial reconnaissance of the area in a B-24 staging from RAF Reykjavík. Although minor sites were found, no flat area suitable for the desired 5,000 foot runways and clear approaches could be identified. As a result, the BE-2 expedition in September 1941 was limited to establishing a radio and weather reporting station at the village of Angmagssalik, the only sizable human habitation along the coast. Comanche Bay
Igtip Kangertiva, also known as Comanche Bay ( da, Comanche Bugt). is a fjord in Eastern Greenland. It is part of the Sermersooq municipality. History During World War II a weather station of the US Army Air CorpsSpencer Apollonio, ''Lands That Hold One Spellbound: A Story of East Greenland'', 2008 pp. 272-275 and the US Coast Guard was established in Comanche Bay. The decision was taken in the spring of 1942 and the USCGC Comanche (WPG-76), a ship of the Greenland Patrol, was sent to survey the fjord. The USCGC Comanche reached the site in July and the bay was subsequently named after it. Besides the weather facility the US military wanted a base from which the warplanes of Operation Bolero that were forced to land on the Greenland ice sheet could be rescued. Cape Dan
Kulusuk (old spelling: ''Qulusuk''Eastgreenland.com.Kulusuk".), formerly Kap Dan, is a settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in southeastern Greenland, located on an island of the same name. The settlement population of 241 includes many Danes choosing to live there due to the airport. In the Kalaallisut language, the name of the village means "Chest of a Black Guillemot". Geography The urbanized area of the settlement is centered around the harbour in the northwestern part of the island, on the shores of the Torsuut Tunoq sound. Air Transport Command (ATC) was a United States Air Force unit that was created during World War II as the strategic airlift component of the United States Army Air Forces. It had two main missions, the first being the delivery of supplies and equipment between the United States and the overseas combat theaters; the second was the ferrying of aircraft from the manufacturing plants in the United States to where they were needed for training or for operational use in combat. DYE Stations were Distant Early Warning Line sites of the DEW Line eastern extension in Arctic North America in Greenland (DEW Greenland Extension, "DEW East") Note: Printed after December 1958--the Reno ADS (p. 2 map) became part of the 25 AD on 15 Feb 1959. and Iceland. DYE Stations were equipped with the 600 MHz AN/FPS-30 long-range radar within geodesic domes of about 60 feet diameter.
