FC Blackburn Ladies Football Club are an English women's football club affiliated with Blackburn Rovers. In 2006, they won the second tier FA Women's Premier League Northern Division and were promoted to the FA Women's Premier League National Division, where they played until relegation in the 2010–11 season. In 2018–19, they won promotion to second highest level league of English football. History Early days The ladies' club was formed in 1991 as part of Blackburn Rovers' community programme, and reached the Northern Combination Women's Football League in 1998. After a few years in mid-table, the club began to take off in 2002. Natalie Preston
Natalie Preston (born 16 August 1977) is an English female former football midfielder. Club career Preston captained Tranmere Rovers Ladies before joining Leeds Carnegie in the 2003 close season. She went on to captain Leeds. In May 2006, Preston played for Leeds as they lost 5–0 to Arsenal Ladies in the FA Women's Cup final. Preston joined Blackburn Rovers Ladies in the 2007 close season. Karen Burke (born 14 July 1971) is an English footballer. She most recently played for Blackburn Rovers Ladies. Burke was born in Liverpool and represented England at full international level. Club career Burke only took up football aged 21, with a spell at St. Helens. In 1994 she reached her first FA Women's Cup final with Knowsley United. Burke hit the crossbar in injury time as Knowsley lost 1–0 to Doncaster Belles. Katie Williams (born 24 May 1984) is a former footballer who played for the Welsh national team and Liverpool. Williams played as a central defender and accumulated twenty caps for Wales. Club career Williams began her career at home-town club Bangor City, before moving on to Tranmere Rovers and Blackburn Rovers. She spent the 2008 off-season in the American W-League with the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners but suffered a damaged cruciate ligament. Williams also played for Caernarfon Town in the North Wales Women's Football League in 2015/2016 season. On her recovery she joined Liverpool. The 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, the fifth edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup, was an international association football competition for women held in China from 10 to 30 September 2007. Originally, China was to host the 2003 edition, but the outbreak of SARS in that country forced that event to be moved to the United States. FIFA immediately granted the 2007 event to China, which meant that no new host nation was chosen competitively until the voting was held for the 2011 Women's World Cup. The tournament opened with a record-breaking match in Shanghai, as Germany beat Argentina 11–0 to register the biggest win and the highest scoring match in Women's World Cup history, records which stood until 2019. The tournament ended with Germany defeating Brazil 2–0 in the final, having never surrendered a goal in the entire tournament.
