Black Bell Records is an independent record label based in New York City. The label was started in 2010 and is owned by Ayad Al Adhamy, who is member of the synthpop band, Passion Pit. History The label was started to release the 8-track EP ''A Balloon Called Moaning'' by The Joy Formidable in the U.S. Jon Pareles of ''The New York Times'' praised the EP and its "cryptic lyrics that glint with urgency." The album also earned critical raves from ''Spin'' and '' Pitchfork''. Black Bell Records followed up with a one-off single with Dom that also featured Madeline from Cults and was produced by Ayad Al Adhamy. This was the first 7" single in a series that included Boston garage-pop band Girlfriends, Hardly Art alumni Pretty & Nice and duo Secret Music. Ayad Al Adhamy
Ayad Al Adhamy ( ar, إياد الأعظمي) is an American multi-instrumentalist, producer and record label owner based in Brooklyn, New York. He is the former synthesizer, sample, and percussion player of Passion Pit, and shared remix duties with Nate Donmoyer and Ian Hultquist. He currently fronts the Brooklyn garage rock outfit Team Spirit, signed to Vice Records/Warner Bros. Records. They released their Self Titled Debut EP on April 4, 2013, and it was received positively. Cults (band)
Cults is an American indie pop band formed in New York City in 2010. The band first came to prominence when they posted a three-song EP, ''Cults 7"'', on their Bandcamp page. They are signed to Sony and In the Name Of, a record label that was set up by British singer Lily Allen. History Cults formed in 2010 while guitarist Brian Oblivion and singer Madeline Follin, both from San Diego, were students in New York City. Oblivion went to NYU to study documentary cinema, Follin went to The New School. Madeline had previously recorded with punk band Youth Gone Mad on the album, '' Touching Cloth''. Cults released an EP on Forrest Family Records, ''Cults 7"'', with the track "Go Outside" recorded by Paul Kostabi at Thunderdome Studios, named "Best New Music" by Pitchfork Media. Stepdad (band)
Stepdad is an American electronic/pop band based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. History Originally a duo, Stepdad was formed in Chicago, Illinois during the summer of 2009 when Mark Tafel and Ryan McCarthy, who were roommates at the time, began writing songs together in their apartment. They initially gained exposure in early 2010 when they composed a theme song for the popular web comic "Axe Cop". The duo's song became the official theme song for the "Axe Cop" comic and motion comic. In April 2010, the band released their first EP, '' Ordinaire'', independently via Bandcamp. The EP spawned two singles, "Jungles" and "My Leather, My Fur, My Nails". In June 2012, Stepdad released their debut LP, '' Wildlife Pop'', under Black Bell Records. Total Slacker is an American band from Brooklyn, New York. In their first year as a group, they released two singles on independent record labels both in the U.S. and Europe and played over 100 shows in New York, garnering the attention of press and international radio play. \ Total Slacker's first drummer was Ross Condon, the younger brother to Zach Condon of the band, Beirut. In January 2011, their single "Crystal Necklace" reached #36 on Pitchfork's Top 50 songs from 2010 readers poll. On March 14, 2011, the band's single "Crystal Necklace" was released on London based record label Fierce Panda, a compilation cassette tape with bands Dum Dum Girls, Twin Sister, Beach Fossils, Real Estate and Weekends. ARMS (band)
ARMS is an American indie rock band, formed in New York in 2004. Originally a solo project created by ex-Harlem Shakes' guitarist Todd Goldstein, ARMS has since evolved into a four-piece band, with the inclusion of drummer Tlacael Esparza, bassist Matty Fasano and keyboardist Dave Harrington. Goldstein handles guitar and vocal duties. History Goldstein originally started ARMS as a musical outlet for himself when he first moved to Brooklyn. When he joined Harlem Shakes in 2006, ARMS became his side-project, put on the back burner so he could focus on guitar and songwriting duties for his new band. Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, with a list of releases for each country, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event. DoM is an American pop / electronic solo musical project by Dominic Cournoyer originating from Worcester, Massachusetts. With warped vocals, fuzzy lo-fi distortion, and broken Casio keyboard lines, Dom filters a DIY aesthetic through the upbeat, sunny rhythms of pop music. Career DoM's debut, '' Sun Bronzed Greek Gods'' ( EP), was released in March 2010, and received critical acclaim. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music.
