Bjerkebanen, often simply called Bjerke, is a neighborhood in the Økern district of the Bjerke borough in northeastern Oslo, Norway. It lies in the Grorud Valley. The area is bordered by the Refstad neighborhood to the west and Brobekk to the east, and by Risløkka and Vollebekk to the south. Økern was a farm in the former municipality of Aker, Norway, Aker, Norway, and is currently a district in the borough of Bjerke (borough), Bjerke in the city of Oslo. Bjerke is a borough of the city of Oslo, Norway. The most densely populated residential areas, including the high-rise apartment blocks of Linderud, are located along Trondheimsveien (Norwegian National Road 4). The Grorud Valley ( no, Groruddalen) is a valley and urban area or suburb in the northeastern part of Oslo, the capital of Norway. Four of Oslo's boroughs lie within the Grorud Valley; Bjerke (borough), Bjerke to the west, Alna to the south, Grorud to the north, and Stovner to the east. The name ''Groruddalen'' has been in use at least since the mid-19th century. The current use of the name ''Groruddalen'' was coined in 1960 to describe the area covered by the local newspaper ''Akers Avis Groruddalen'', until then named ''Akers avis''. Norwegian National Road 4 ( no, Riksvei 4, ) is a national road in Norway which is the main route north from the capital city of Oslo to the junction with the European route E6 highway at the village of Biri in Gjøvik Municipality. The road runs through Nittedal, Hadeland, and Toten to its terminus on the shore of the lake Mjøsa. In 2021, the government began studying ways to improve the road to allieviate traffic problems. Årvoll is a residential community situated in the Bjerke district of Oslo, Norway. It was here that anti-Nazi activists Viggo Hansteen and Rolf Wickstrøm – the first two Norwegians to be executed by the Nazis during the five-year German occupation of Norway – lost their lives on September 10, 1941.
