Biswas (pronounced in Bengali as "bish-shash") is a surname commonly used by the Bengali community. Kanti Biswas ( bn, কান্তি বিশ্বাস), was an Indian communist politician and former minister from West Bengal. Early life Kanti Biswas was born in Namasudra community to Jogendranath Biswas at Bukrail, Kashiani, Faridpur district, Bengal Presidency in British India. He did M.Com. and was deeply involved in the student politics of Dacca University, starting with the Bengali Language Movement and later started teaching in Quaid E Azam Memorial College. Hemanga Biswas (14 December 1912 – 22 November 1987) was an Indian singer, composer, author and political activist, known for his literature in Bengali and Assamese, advocacy of peoples music, drawing from genres of folk music, including Bhatiali originally popular among the fishermen of Bengal. Early life Biswas was born in Habiganj, Sylhet, British India (now in Bangladesh) on 14 December 1912 to Harakumar and Sarojini Biswas. He went to the Middle English School in Habiganj. He studied in the George Institution of Dibrugarh from 1925 to 1927 when Nilmoni Phukan was its headmaster. There he became interested in Assamese culture. Dipendu Biswas (29 September 1981) is an Indian retired professional footballer, who is the current team manager of the I-League outfit Mohammedan Sporting Club. Chhabi Biswas (''Chabi Biśbās'') (13 July 1900 – 11 June 1962) was an Indian actor, primarily known for his performances in Tapan Sinha's '' Kabuliwala'' and Satyajit Ray's films '' Jalshaghar'' (''The Music Room'', 1958), '' Devi'' (''The Goddess'', 1960) and ''Kanchenjungha'' (1962).
