Bisset Hawkins Medal
The Bisset Hawkins Medal is a triennial award made by the Royal College of Physicians of London to acknowledge work done in the preceding ten years in advancing sanitary science or promoting public health. It is named after Francis Bisset Hawkins (1796–1884), a distinguished London physician and is presented after the Harveian Oration. The medal, made of gold, was endowed by Captain Edward Wilmot Williams in 1896. Royal College Of Physicians
The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is a British professional membership body dedicated to improving the practice of medicine, chiefly through the accreditation of physicians by examination. Founded by royal charter from King Henry VIII in 1518, the RCP is the oldest medical college in England. It set the first international standard in the classification of diseases, and its library contains medical texts of great historical interest. The college is sometimes referred to as the Royal College of Physicians of London to differentiate it from other similarly named bodies. William Wilson Jameson
Sir (William) Wilson Jameson (12 May 1885 – 18 October 1962) was a Scottish medical doctor and the ninth Chief Medical Officer of England 1940 - 1950. Jameson was born in Perth, Scotland and educated at the University of Aberdeen. He moved to London before the First World War and was appointed as Medical Officer of Health in Finchley and St Marylebone in 1920. He also trained in law and was called to the Bar in 1922. He was appointed Dean of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1931. He introduced much more public health information than had been seen before and was not afraid to tackle sensitive subjects such as venereal disease, the subject of a BBC broadcast in October 1942. He was influential in the detailed planning for the introduction of the National Health Service where he worked closely with Aneurin Bevan. Kay-Tee Khaw, (born 14 October 1950) is a Chinese-Singaporean British physician and academic, specialising in the maintenance of health in later life and the causes and prevention of chronic diseases. Kenneth Calman
Sir Kenneth Charles Calman, HonFAcadMEd (born 25 December 1941) is a doctor and academic who formerly worked as a surgeon, oncologist and cancer researcher and held the position of Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, and then England. He was Warden and Vice-Chancellor of Durham University from 1998 to 2006 before becoming Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. Sir Ernest Donald Acheson (17 September 1926 – 10 January 2010) was a British physician and epidemiologist who served as Chief Medical Officer of the United Kingdom from 1983 to 1991. Geoffrey Arthur Rose (19 April 1926 – 12 November 1993) was an eminent epidemiologist whose ideas have been credited with transforming the approach to strategies for improving health. He was formerly the Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Jerry Morris
Jeremiah Noah Morris (6 May 1910 – 28 October 2009) was a Scottish epidemiologist who established the importance of physical activity in preventing cardiovascular disease. Early life Morris was born on 6 May 1910 in Liverpool. His Jewish family had emigrated to escape pogroms in Poland. Arriving by boat in Liverpool, the family adopted the surname of the ship's captain. His family moved to Glasgow, where Jerry was brought up in poverty. His childhood experiences of Glasgow's slums informed his later work, and led to his membership of the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party which he joined at the age 16, and only left when in his nineties in his disgust at the Iraq War, Second Gulf War. Sir Derrick Melville Dunlop FRSE FRCP FRCPE FRCSE FDS LLD QHP (3 April 1902-9 June 1980) was a senior Scottish physician and pharmacologist at the forefront of British medical administration and policy-making in the late 20th century. He created the Dunlop Committee which investigates the side-effects of new drugs in the UK. George Godber
Sir George Edward Godber (4 August 1908 – 7 February 2009) served as Chief Medical Officer for Her Majesty's Government in England from 1960 to 1973. He was also part of the team that planned the National Health Service (NHS) and, as deputy Chief Medical Officer and subsequently Chief Medical officer, campaigned against smoking and for immunization against polio and diphtheria. Richard Doll
Sir William Richard Shaboe Doll (28 October 1912 – 24 July 2005) was a British physician who became an epidemiologist in the mid-20th century and made important contributions to that discipline. He was a pioneer in research linking smoking to health problems. With Ernst Wynder, Bradford Hill and Evarts Graham, he was credited with being the first to prove that smoking increased the risk of :lung cancer and :heart disease. (German studies had suggested a link as early as the 1920s but were forgotten or ignored until the 1990s.)
