Bishop Of British Guiana
The Anglican Diocese of Guyana is one of eight within the Province of the West Indies. Its cathedral is St. George's Cathedral, Georgetown. The diocese came into being on 24 August 1842, when William Austin (1842-1892) was consecrated as the first bishop. Bishops who have served the diocese since then have included: Proctor Swaby (1893-1899), Edward Parry (1900-1921), Oswald Parry (1921-1937), Alan Knight (1937-1979), Randolph George (1980-2009) and Cornell Moss (2009-2015). The current bishop is Charles Davidson (2016-present). In 1842 (shortly after division), her jurisdiction was described as " Demerara, Essequibo, Berbice". British Guiana
British Guiana was a British colony, part of the mainland British West Indies, which resides on the northern coast of South America. Since 1966 it has been known as the independent nation of Guyana. The first European to encounter Guiana was Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle there, starting in the early 17th century, when they founded the colonies of Essequibo and Berbice, adding Demerara in the mid-18th century. In 1796, Great Britain took over these three colonies during hostilities with the French, who had occupied the Netherlands. Britain returned control to the Batavian Republic in 1802 but captured the colonies a year later during the Napoleonic Wars. Religion In Guyana
Religion is an important aspect of identity and society in Guyana. In 2012 the population was 63% Christian, 25% Hindu, 7% Muslim. Religions are reflected by East Indian, African, Chinese, and European ancestry, as well as a significant indigenous population. Members of all ethnic groups are well represented in all religious groups, with two exceptions: most Hindus are Indo-Guyanese, and nearly all Rastafarians are Afro-Guyanese people. Foreign missionaries from many religious groups are present. Christianity has historically been associated with Afro-Guyanese. Practice of other beliefs make up 1% of the population, including the Rastafari movement, Buddhism, and the Baháʼí Faith. More than 3% of the population do not profess any religion. United Society Partners in the Gospel (USPG) is a United Kingdom-based charitable organization (registered charity no. 234518). It was first incorporated under Royal Charter in 1701 as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) as a high church missionary organization of the Church of England and was active in the Thirteen Colonies of North America. The group was renamed in 1965 as the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG) after incorporating the activities of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). Charles Davidson (bishop)
Charles Davidson has been the Bishop of Guyana since 2016. Davidson was born in Mackenzie, Linden, educated at Mackenzie High School, Government Technical Institute in Electrical Craft Practice and at Codrington College, Barbados and University of the West Indies, Cave Hill. He was ordained a deacon in 1977 and a priest in 1978. He did post grad work at Princeton Theological Seminary, General Theological Seminary and University of the South, Sewanee. He is a trained mentor and consultant in Congregational Development specializing in church wellness.
