Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust ran Birmingham Women's Hospital in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, situated very close to the University of Birmingham. On 1 February 2008, it was granted NHS Foundation Trust Status. Birmingham Women's Hospital is a women's hospital which is located directly opposite The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. It is managed by Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust. History The first Birmingham maternity hospital was established in 1842 to reduce the number of women and children dying needlessly from puerperal fever and childbirth related infections. The Birmingham and Midland Hospital for Women was established with eight beds at Showell Green in Sparkhill in 1871. It moved to a converted farmhouse on the Stratford Road in 1878, to a purpose-built facility on Showell Green Lane in 1905 and then to the current modern facility in Edgbaston in 1968. Edgbaston () is an affluent suburban area of central Birmingham, England, historically in Warwickshire, and curved around the southwest of the city centre. In the 19th century, the area was under the control of the Gough-Calthorpe family and the Gillott family who refused to allow factories or warehouses to be built in Edgbaston, thus making it attractive for the wealthier residents of the city. A foundation trust is a semi-autonomous organisational unit within the National Health Service in England. They have a degree of independence from the Department of Health and Social Care (and, until the abolition of SHAs in 2013, their local strategic health authority). The Birmingham Women's Fertility Centre at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, Birmingham, England, formerly named the "Assisted Conception Unit", is one of the UK's leading medical centres for infertility treatment and care. The National Gamete Donation Service (NGDS), now known as the SEED Trust, raises awareness of the national shortage of sperm, egg and embryo donors in the UK. Its aim is to recruit donors to alleviate the shortage, and it provides information on egg, sperm and embryo donation and donor recruitment in the UK.
