Birmingham Theatre School
The Birmingham Theatre School is a drama school, located in Birmingham, England. The school was founded by Sir Barry Jackson in the theatre that he built, namely the Old Rep Theatre, which was also the first repertory theatre in the world. The school now has over 250 students on a variety of full and part-time. In 1942, Sir Barry Jackson appointed Mary Richards, with whom he had previously worked as an actress, to take over as principal of the drama school. In 1990, Chris Rozanski was appointed principal. The school has since relocated to The Old Fire Statiin Highgate, Birmingham and is no longer based at the Old Rep Theatre. Sir Barry Jackson (Theatre Director)
Sir Barry Vincent Jackson (6 September 1879 – 3 April 1961) was an English theatre director, entrepreneur and the founder of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and, alongside George Bernard Shaw, the Malvern Festival. Early life Jackson was born on 6 September 1879 in Kings Norton, Worcestershire the son of George and Jane ( Spreadborough) Jackson. The Jacksons were a prominent and wealthy family of merchant grocers. His father, George, was a prominent businessman who was passionate about the theatre, reportedly naming his son for renowned British stage actor Barry Sullivan. Old Rep
The Old Rep (originally Birmingham Repertory Theatre) is the United Kingdom's first ever purpose-built repertory theatre, constructed in 1913, located on Station Street in Birmingham, England. The theatre was a permanent home for Barry Jackson's Birmingham Repertory Company, formed in 1911 from his amateur theatre group, The Pilgrim Players, founded in 1907. Jackson funded the construction of the theatre and established his professional company there. Architect S. N. Cooke, a colleague from the Birmingham School of Art, collaborated with Barry Jackson in the creation of the theatre. Both Jackson and Cooke took inspiration from the democratic nature of theatres that they had visited in Germany. Repertory
A repertory theatre is a theatre in which a resident company presents works from a specified repertoire, usually in alternation or rotation. United Kingdom Annie Horniman founded the first modern repertory theatre in Manchester after withdrawing her support from the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Horniman's Gaiety Theatre opened its first season in September of 1908. The opening of the Gaiety was followed by the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow and the Liverpool Repertory Theatre. Previously, regional theatre relied on mostly London touring ensembles. During the time the theatre was being run by Annie Horniman, a wide variety of types of plays were produced. Nigel Harris (actor)
Nigel Harris (''born'' 1949) is a British actor. Harris was born in Grahamstown, South Africa. He is the son of the philosopher, Errol Harris, and grandson of Samuel Harris, who with Cecil Rhodes was one of the defenders of Kimberly when the town was besieged during the Boer War. He obtained a B.A. in Philosophy at the University of Nottingham in 1971, where he was the External Affairs Chairman of the Students’ Union. Phil Rose
Phil Rose (born 2 May 1952) is an English actor, best known for his role as Friar Tuck in the 1980s TV series ''Robin of Sherwood''. Theatre Rose was born in Manchester, and established himself as a theatre actor playing Sir Toby Belch in ''Twelfth Night'' and The Gangster in ''Kiss Me, Kate'' at Bristol Old Vic.
