Birkin Baronets
The Birkin Baronetcy, of Ruddington Grange in the parish of Ruddington in the County of Nottingham, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 25 July 1905 for the businessman Thomas Isaac Birkin. He was a lace manufacturer, director of the Great Northern Railway and the Mercantile Steamship Company. His grandson, the 3rd Baronet, was a racing driver. He died without male issue and was succeeded by his uncle, the fourth Baronet. his sons pre-deceased him and he was succeeded by his nephew, the fifth Baronet. As of 2007 the title is held by the latter's son, the sixth Baronet, who succeeded in 1985. Tim Birkin
Sir Henry Ralph Stanley "Tim" Birkin, 3rd Baronet (26 July 1896 – 22 June 1933) was a British racing driver, one of the "Bentley Boys" of the 1920s. Background and family Birkin was born into a wealthy Nottingham family in 1896, the son of Sir Thomas Stanley Birkin, 2nd Baronet, and the Hon. Margaret Diana Hopetoun Chetwynd. In childhood, Henry Birkin gained the nickname "Tim", after the children's comic book character Tiger Tim, created by Julius Stafford Baker, who was extremely popular at the time. It was his nickname for the rest of his life. Birkin married Audrey Clara Lilian Latham, daughter of Sir Thomas Paul Latham, 1st Baronet, and Florence Clara Walley, on 12 July 1921; they divorced in 1928. Ruddington is a large village in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire, England. The village is south of Nottingham and northwest of Loughborough. It had a population of 6,441 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 7,216 at the 2011 Census. The village residents have previously conducted high-profile campaigns in an attempt to retain the rural identity as a village and prevent it being subsumed into the adjoining suburban village of Clifton and town of West Bridgford. The Great Northern Railway (GNR) was a British railway company incorporated in 1846 with the object of building a line from London to York. It quickly saw that seizing control of territory was key to development, and it acquired, or took leases of, many local railways, whether actually built or not. Sir Thomas Birkin, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Isaac Birkin, 1st Baronet (15 February 1831 – 16 January 1922) was a Nottingham lace manufacturer. Early life He was born on 15 February 1831, the second son of Richard Birkin (1805–1870), who founded the family lace-making business. Career After his father retired in 1856, his sons Richard Jr and Thomas took over, until Richard Jr retired in 1862, and Thomas was left in sole charge. By 1898, the business had been split into two companies, Birkin and Co (fancy lace), and T. I. Birkin and Co (lace curtains), both headquartered at Broadway, Nottingham. They had expanded internationally, with large factories in Saxony and Chester, Pennsylvania, US. Sir Charles Lloyd Birkin, 5th Baronet (24 September 1907 – 1985) was an English writer of horror short stories and the editor of the ''Creeps Library'' of anthologies. Typically working under the pseudonym Charles Lloyd, Birkin's tales tended towards the conte cruels rather than supernatural fiction, although he did write some ghost stories.
