Binka Zhelyazkova
Binka Zhelyazkova ( bg, Бинка Желязкова, 15 July 1923 – 31 July 2011), was a Bulgarian film director who made films between the late 1950s and the 1990s. She was the first Bulgarian woman to direct a feature film and one of the few women worldwide to direct feature films in the 1950s. Career Zhelyazkova graduated from the Sofia Theatre Institute in 1956 and briefly worked as an assistant director at Sofia Film Studios "Boyana" before directing her first feature, ''Life Flows Quietly By...'' (1957). This film established the collaboration with her husband, screenwriter Hristo Ganev, with whom she worked on many of her films. The film explored the lives of the former partisan fighters now in positions of power and was critical of the communist régime in Bulgaria. The leadership of the Bulgarian Communist Party reacted with fury and for 30 years banned the film by Party decree. Svilengrad
Svilengrad ( bg, Свиленград; el, Σβίλενγκραντ; ota, Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) is a town in Haskovo Province, south-central Bulgaria, situated at the border of Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Svilengrad Municipality. Geography Svilengrad is close to the road borders of Greece and Turkey (supposedly one of the largest road customs in Europe). Svilengrad is located ESE of Sofia and Plovdiv, South of Varna and Burgas, West of Edirne and North of the nearest Greek community Ormenio and Alexandroupoli in Greece. There is a higher level of employment than in surrounding villages. Elka Nikolova
Elka Nikolova ( bg, Елка Николова) is a New York-based Bulgarian filmmaker. She has received recognition as the director of her documentary film '' Binka: To Tell a Story About Silence'' which has helped to rekindle interest in the work and career of the pioneering Bulgarian film director Binka Zhelyazkova (1923–2011). The film took five years to make and includes interviews with many of Zhelyazkova's collaborators. The documentary premiered in New York, at the Museum of Modern Art, on April 4, 2007, and was shown at the 2007 South East European Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it won the Audience Award for best documentary film.
