Billy-Berclau
Billy-Berclau (; pcd, Bili-Bérclo) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. Geography A small town east of Béthune and southwest of Lille, at the junction of the D163 and N47 roads. It is situated at the junction of the Canal de la Deûle and the Canal d'Aire. Light industry and a little farming have replaced the coal mining of the past. History The town was completely destroyed during World War I. On 27 March 2003, an explosion at the dynamite factory killed four people. Béthune ( ; archaic and ''Bethwyn'' historically in English) is a city in northern France, sub-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais department. Geography Béthune is located in the former province of Artois. It is situated south-east of Calais, west of Lille, and north of Paris. Canal De La Deûle
The Canal de la Deûle is one of the oldest canals in northern France, originally connecting the river Scarpe near Douai with the river Lys at Deûlémont near the Belgian border. Roughly half of its original length has been absorbed in the high-capacity Dunkerque-Escaut waterway, as shown on the map, and the remaining length through the port of Lille is often considered as a branch of the main route, hence the alternative names ''Liaison'' or ''Antenne Bauvin-Lys.'' This official name was never adopted by the local population, which refers simply to the Deûle, evoking its original state as a natural river, although it has the size and the appearance of a built canal.
