Bill Benton (footballer)
William Joseph Benton (11 March 1906 – 31 August 1979) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for West Perth in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). Benton, who came from Birchip, was Richmond's full-back in the 1929 VFL Grand Final against Collingwood. Although he kept Gordon Coventry to two goals, Benton would finish on the losing side. Gordon Richard James Coventry (25 September 1901 – 7 November 1968) was a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Punt Road Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as the Swinburne Centre, is an Australian rules football ground and former cricket oval located within the Yarra Park precinct of East Melbourne, Victoria, situated a few hundred metres to the east of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The 1930 VFL season was the 34th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 3 May until 11 October, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The 1929 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Collingwood Football Club and Richmond Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 28 September 1929.
