Bill Armstrong (ice Hockey, Born 1966)
William Harold Armstrong (born June 25, 1966) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Early life Armstrong was born in London, Ontario. As a youth, he played in the 1979 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from London, Ontario. Armstrong played at Western Michigan University from 1986 to 1989. Career Armstrong played in one National Hockey League (NHL) game for the Philadelphia Flyers during the 1990–91 NHL season and spent the rest of his professional career in the American Hockey League (AHL) and International Hockey League (IHL). His playing career was cut short due to a brain tumor which required surgery. He invented the Michigan goal, a lacrosse-style shot notably used by Mike Legg (after whose alma mater the shot is named), Sidney Crosby, Miks Indrašis, Mikael Granlund, Andrei Svechnikov and Trevor Zegras. Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament
The Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament (french: Tournoi international de hockey pee-wee de Québec) is an annual minor ice hockey event in Quebec City. The tournament was founded in 1960 to coincide with the Quebec Winter Carnival, and give an opportunity for international competition to players less than 12 years old. The tournament raises funds for the local Patro Roc-Amadour foundation, and is mostly run by volunteers and a few staff. The event takes place each year in February at Videotron Centre, and previously spent 56 seasons at Quebec Coliseum. As of 2018, the event has showcased the talent of over 1,200 future professionals in the National Hockey League or the World Hockey Association. Trevor Zegras ( ; born March 20, 2001) is an American professional ice hockey center for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Ducks, ninth overall, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Zegras played college hockey at Boston University. Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov ( rus, Андрей Игоревич Свечников, p=ɐnˈdrʲej ˈiɡərʲɪvʲɪtɕ ˈsvʲet͡ɕnʲɪkəf; born 26 March 2000) is a Russian professional ice hockey winger for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Hurricanes selected him second overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Svechnikov began his junior career in North America with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Mikael Antero Granlund (born 26 February 1992) is a Finnish professional ice hockey centre and alternate captain for the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously played professionally in Finland with Oulun Kärpät and HIFK of the SM-liiga and the Minnesota Wild of the NHL. Miks Indrašis (born 30 September 1990) is a Latvian professional ice hockey forward who is currently playing with Schwenninger Wild Wings in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Playing career Junior Indrašis began playing hockey in Latvian minor and youth leagues. During this period he played for Liepājas Metalurgs youth team and SK LSPA/Riga. Sidney Crosby
Sidney Patrick Crosby (born August 7, 1987) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre and captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Mike Legg
Mike Legg (born May 25, 1975) is a Canadian former ice hockey player. He is most famous for the Michigan goal, named in honor of one that he scored while playing for the University of Michigan, in a 1996 NCAA Tournament game against the University of Minnesota, in which he picked the puck up onto his stick behind the net and wrapped it around into the top corner of the net. The goal was widely recognized around the hockey world; Legg was awarded "Goal of the Year" by ''Inside Hockey'' and the stick he used was donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame. This move has since been attempted by many other players, including Ryan Getzlaf and Tyler Ennis. The first successful NHL attempt of this move came from Andrei Svechnikov of the Carolina Hurricanes, scoring against Calgary Flames goaltender David Rittich. Michigan Goal
In ice hockey, a Michigan goal (also known as a high wrap, a Zorro, or by other names) is a goal scored by an attacker starting behind the opposing net, lifting the puck onto their stick, moving their stick around to a top corner of the net, and shooting the puck into the net at close range. Creation Bill Armstrong, a minor-league hockey player, started practicing lacrosse-style shots for fun while playing for the Albany River Rats. Armstrong asked his head coach, Robbie Ftorek, whether he could try such a shot in a game; Ftorek replied, "You do it so easily, why don't you try it?" Armstrong scored four goals with the move, which he called a "high wrap," leading to appreciation from fans and local media.
