Big Walker Mountain Tunnel
The Big Walker Mountain Tunnel is a vehicular tunnel in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia that carries Interstate 77 through and under Big Walker Mountain. It is located a few miles south of the town of Bland in Bland County and a segment of the Appalachian Trail, and about south of its longer cousin, the East River Mountain Tunnel. History The tunnel was first opened in 1972 after five years of construction labor. It carried a price tag of $50 million (equivalent to $ in ), which at the time was the most expensive single project undertaken on Virginia's Interstate system. The opening of the tunnel reduced the travel time from Wytheville to Bland County by 30 minutes. Bland County is a county (United States), United States county located in the Southwest Virginia, southwestern portion of the Commonwealth (U.S. state), Commonwealth of Virginia. Like most of Southwestern Virginia, it is part of the Appalachian region. The county seat is the unincorporated area of Bland, Virginia, Bland. Bland County was created in 1861 from parts of Wythe County, Virginia, Wythe, Tazewell County, Virginia, Tazewell, and Giles County, Virginia, Giles counties in Virginia. Big Walker Lookout
Big Walker Lookout is a observation tower located in the Blue Ridge Highlands Region atop Big Walker Mountain in Bland County, Virginia. Location The tower is accessed from the Big Walker General Store, just off US Route 52 about from Wytheville, Virginia. The first store building burned in 2003 and a new store was built just to the right of the first. Originally, visitors crossed to the tower by way of a swinging bridge that connected to the back of the old general store. The swinging bridge was not destroyed in the fire and still stands. Visitors can cross to the edge where the original staircase connected to the bridge. Big Walker Lookout hosts traditional arts demonstrations on weekends. Ole Singstad
Ole Knutsen Singstad (June 29, 1882 – December 8, 1969) was a Norwegian-American civil engineer best known for his work on underwater vehicular tunnels in New York City. Singstad designed the ventilation system for the Holland Tunnel, which subsequently became commonly used in other automotive tunnels, and advanced the use of the immersed tube method of underwater vehicular tunnel building, a system of constructing the tunnels with prefabricated sections. He also designed the Lincoln Tunnel, Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel, and Queens–Midtown Tunnel. By 1950, Singstad had designed and overseen the construction of more underwater tunnels than all other engineers combined. Wytheville is a town in, and the county seat of, Wythe County, in southwestern Virginia, United States. It is named after George Wythe, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. Wytheville's population was 8,211 at the 2010 census.
