Big Four Depot (Galion, Ohio)
The Big Four Depot of Galion, Ohio was a passenger train station serving the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, commonly known as the 'Big Four Depot,' and the New York Central Railroad. The brick and wood-constructed building, still intact, is located at 127 Washington Street at Harding Way. It was one of two railroad stations in the city, the other serving the Erie Railroad. Big Four Depot's heyday The building was opened in 1900, and it served as a Big Four division headquarters. Passenger trains northeast from the station headed to Cleveland. Trains southwest from the station headed to Indianapolis and St. Louis; trains headed south from the station to Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Peak usage occurred during and after World War I, with about 32 trains a day stopping there. Major political party presidential nominees, including Al Smith, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. The ''Galion Inquirer'' is an American daily newspaper published in Galion, Ohio. It is owned by AIM Media Midwest. In addition to Galion, the newspaper circulates in Crestline and Iberia. The ''Royal Palm'' was a named train of the Southern Railway that ran from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Jacksonville, Florida, and then on the Florida East Coast Railway's '' East Coast Champion'' to Miami, Florida. The train was discontinued in 1970. Operations The ''Royal Palm'' provided connections with the New York Central Railroad at Cincinnati for passengers headed to Detroit, Cleveland and St. Louis. Galion is a city in Crawford, Morrow, and Richland counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 10,453 at the 2020 census. Galion is the second-largest city in Crawford County after Bucyrus. The Crawford County portion of Galion is part of the Bucyrus Micropolitan Statistical Area. The small portion of the city that is located in Richland County is part of the Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the portion extending into Morrow County is considered part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. The ''Ohio State Limited'' was a named passenger train operated by the New York Central Railroad (NYC) between New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio, via Buffalo and Cleveland, Ohio. Service began in 1924 and continued until 1967, with some vestiges remaining until 1971. History NYC began the ''Ohio State Limited'' on April 27, 1924. The new service departed Grand Central Terminal at 3 PM, just after the '' 20th Century Limited'', with a scheduled arrival in Cincinnati of 9:30 AM the following morning.
