Biathlon World Championships 2000
The 35th Biathlon World Championships were held for the second time in Oslo, Norway from 19 February to 26 February 2000. Due to fog, the men's relay was moved to Lahti, Finland on March 11. Biathlon World Championships
The first Biathlon World Championships (BWCH) was held in 1958, with individual and team contests for men. The number of events has grown significantly over the years. Beginning in 1984, women biathletes had their own World Championships, and finally, from 1989, both genders have been participating in joint Biathlon World Championships. In 1978 the development was enhanced by the change from the large army rifle calibre to a small bore rifle, while the range to the target was reduced from 150 to 50 meters. Venues The Biathlon World Championships of the season takes place during February or March. Some years it has been necessary to schedule parts of the Championships at other than the main venue because of weather and/or snow conditions. Pavel Rostovtsev
Pavel Aleksandrovich Rostovtsev (Russian: Павел Александрович Ростовцев; born 21 September 1971) is a Russian former biathlete. Life and career Rostovtsev lives in Krasnoyarsk. He is a three times world champion in biathlon. He has competed in the World Cup since the 1995–96 season. In 2000 he became World Champion with the Russian relay team in the World Championships in Lahti. The following year he won both the sprint and the pursuit in the World Championships in Pokljuka. In the 2001–02 season he came second in the overall World Cup standings. He hasn't won a single World Cup competition since the 2001–02 season. In the 2006 Olympics in Turin he was a part of the silver medal winning Russian relay team. In November 2006, Rostovtsev announced his retirement due to disagreements with the Russian Biathon Union. Vadim Sashurin
Vadim Leonidovich Sashurin ( be, Вадзім Леанідавіч Сашурын; born 19 February 1970) is a former Soviet and Belarusian biathlete and current coach. In the lead-up to the 2002–03 season, Sashurin was caught using the banned steroid nandrolone. He was initially banned for 15 months, but the ban was extended to 24 months after Sashurin failed to take part in an anti-doping campaign, as mandated by the IBU. Rustam Valiullin
Rustam Valiullin (born in Ulianovsk on ) is a retired Belarusian biathlete. He competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics, 2002, 2006 Winter Olympics, 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, 2010 Winter Olympics for Belarus. His best finish is 11th, as a member of the Belarusian relay team in Biathlon at the 2002 Winter Olympics – Men's relay, 2006 and Biathlon at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's relay, 2010. His best individual performance is 24th, in the Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's sprint, 2006 sprint. As of March 2013, he has won two medals at the Biathlon World Championships, both in relays; bronze in the men's in Biathlon World Championships 2003, 2003 and silver in the mixed in Biathlon World Championships 2008, 2008. Sven Fischer
Sven Fischer (born 16 April 1971) is a former German biathlete. He trained with the WSV Oberhof 05 club, and was coached by Frank Ullrich and Fritz Fischer (national coaches) and Klaus Siebert (club coach). After the 2006/07 biathlon season, he retired. Background Fischer, who stands at and weighs , was born in Schmalkalden, Thuringia (former East Germany). His apparent talents for athletics was discovered early and already in third grade he was training three times a week in the BSG Werkzeugkombinat sports club. In the fifth grade, he became district champion of his age class. In September 1983, the boarding school Kinder- und Jugendsportschule (KJS) accepted him on a biathlon youth scholarship. After his exam in 1989, he joined the army studying to become a sports teacher. Egil Gjelland
Egil Gjelland (born 12 November 1973) is a former Norwegian biathlete. He is olympic champion in the biathlon relay from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Egil Gjelland grew up in Voss, the home of many world class biathletes, and started doing biathlon at the age of 15. He first entered the national team in 1996. Gjelland's strength is in shooting. His greatest triumphs have come on Norway's relay team, where he was a regular feature for several years, thanks to his ability to keep his cool and deliver faultless shooting. In the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, he won the gold medal on the relay, together with Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Halvard Hanevold and Frode Andresen. In the Biathlon World Championship 2005 in Hochfilzen, Gjelland again helped win the relay, Norway's first relay-gold in the world championships for 38 years. Vladimir Drachev
Vladimir Petrovich Drachev (russian: Владимир Петрович Драчёв, born 7 March 1966) is a former Soviet, Russian and Belarusian biathlete. He formerly had Russian citizenship and started for Russia until 2002. Drachev has four world championship titles in his career (two individually and two for teams). He also has two olympic relay medals for Russia (silver in 1994, and bronze in 1998). During his career he took a total of 11 World Championship medals and 15 World Cup race wins. Viktor Maigourov
Viktor Viktorovich Maigourov (russian: Виктор Викторвич Майгуров); born 7 February 1969) is a former biathlete from Russia. Career Maigourov competed for Belarus at the Lillehammer 1994, where he placed fourth on the relay with the Belarusian team. He won eight World Cup victories, his last at Oberhof in 2001. Competing for Russia, he won two Olympic bronze medals; in the relay at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, and in the 20 km at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. His best overall World Cup placing is second in 1995/1996. Maigourov also won twice at the Holmenkollen ski festival biathlon competition in 1996 with wins in the sprint and pursuit events. Wolfgang Perner
Wolfgang Perner (17 September 1967 – 1 October 2019) was an Austrian biathlete. The IOC banned Perner for life from competing in the Olympics as the result of a doping scandal at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Biography He was a part of the Austrian national biathlon team since 1992. He failed to qualify for the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, but his career improved afterwards, firstly with a third place in Holmenkollen, and afterwards with his first World Cup in Novosibirsk. Perner competed in four Olympic Games, and won his only medal in the sprint at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where he took bronze, behind Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Sven Fischer. This was Austria's first Olympic medal in biathlon. Oļegs Maļuhins
Oļegs Maļuhins (рус. Олег Малюхин, born 6 May 1969) is a former Latvian biathlete. Maļuhins was node made part of the Latvian Olympic biathlon team in 2006, and so participated in cross-country skiing instead. He retired after that season, but announced a comeback in 2008 stating that he would try to qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics. He did not qualify. Paavo Puurunen
Paavo Puurunen (born 28 August 1973 in Kuhmo, Kainuu) is a retired Finnish biathlete who competed at four Winter Olympics. Puurunen debuted on the World Cup scene in the 1995/96 season. His best overall placing is from 1997/98 season when he finished 13th. He won his lone world cup victory in Pokljuka in 2001, in the World Championship, on the 20 km. His second world cup medal bronze in a pursuit is also from world championship that happened in 2003 in Khanty-Mansiysk.
