Bhookh (1947 Film)
''Bookh'' (Hunger) is a Bollywood film. It was released in 1947. Safdar Aah, a writer and lyricist, turned producer and director with ''Bhookh''. Made under the Rang Mahal Ltd. banner, the film starred Sheikh Mukhtar, Kanhaiyalal, and new find actress Husna, in the main lead with music by Anil Biswas. Actress Kiran played the second female lead in her debut role. Others in the cast included Agha, Dulari, Narmada Shankar and Abu Bakar. The film was a social drama about the poor trying to earn a living to appease their hunger, only to be oppressed by the rich corporate companies and business men. Sheikh Mukhtar
Sheikh Mukhtar was the son of Chaudhry Ashfaq Ahmed (who was a railway police inspector and born in Karachi, British India; now Pakistan) Chaudhary Ashfaq Ahmed intentionally got transferred and migrated to Delhi. Sheikh Mukhtar was born on 24 December 1914 in Delhi. He had spent his childhood in Gali choodi waalan (Near Jama Mosque, Delhi-110006) and took education from Anglo Arabic School, Ajmeri Gate, Delhi-11006. His father wanted his son to join the Police or Army on a higher rank, but Sheikh Mukhtar was keenly interested in theatre. One of his acquaintances from his area started working in a theatre company, so Sheikh Mukhtar also moved to Kolkata and joined the company. A tall and manly figure - he stood 6 feet and 2 inches -, Sheikh Mukhtar played a variety of roles such as "Dada (Contemporary Bhai)." Dulari (actress)
Dulari (real name Ambika Gautam) (18 April 1928 – 18 January 2013) was an Indian actress, who worked as character actor in Hindi cinema, appearing in 135 films, most notably ''Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai'' (1961), ''Mujhe Jeene Do'' (1963), ''Teesri Kasam'' (1966), ''Padosan'' (1968) and ''Deewaar'' (1975). Early life Dulari was born on 18 April 1928 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Her real name was Ambika Gautam. She was a Kanyakubja Brahmin from the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. She was nick-named Rajdulari and later on only Dulari remained by which she was known. Career Forced to look for work after her father's illness, Dulari made her film debut with '' Bahen''(1941), ''Hamari Baat'' (1943), produced by Bombay Talkies, and went to appear as a character actor in over 135 films in the following six decades. Ghulam Haider (composer)
Ghulam Haider (1908 – 9 November 1953), also known by the honorary title Master Ghulam Haider, was a Pakistani music composer who worked both in India and later in Pakistan after its independence in 1947. He changed the face of film songs by combining the popular Raags with the verve and rhythm of Punjabi music, and also helped raise the status of film music directors. He is also known for giving a break to the well-known playback singer, Lata Mangeshkar. In an interview, Lata Mangeshkar herself disclosed on her 84th birthday in 2013, "Ghulam Haider is truly my Godfather. Geeta Dutt (born Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri; 23 November 1930 – 20 July 1972) was an Indian playback singer and a famous Hindi and Bengali classical artist, born in Faridpur before the Partition of India. Shamshad Begum (Hindi: शमशाद बेगम, IAST: ''Śamśād Bēgam''; 14 April 1919 – 23 April 2013) was an Indian singer who was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry. Husna was a Pakistani actress in the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. She was first introduced as a child star in film ''Jan-e-Bahar'' (1958) and played the daughter of Sudhir and Musarrat Nazir. Kanhaiyalal (1910 14 August 1982) was an Indian actor who acted in 105 films in his career, primarily in Hindi films produced in Bollywood, the Mumbai-based film industry. Early life Kanhaiyalal was born in 1910 in Varanasi. His father Pandit Bhairodutt Choube, popularly known as Choubeji, was the proprietor of the Sanatan Dharm Natak Samaj in Varanasi. With his father not in agreement with him taking up any form of stage work, he eventually wore out his father's opposition and did odd jobs in the troupe. At 16, he started writing and then moved on to small roles. When his father died, the brothers tried for some time to run the drama company.
