Beulah Dark Cloud
Beulah Dark Cloud (also known as Beulah Tahamont) was a Native American actress and performer who appeared in several silent films by D. W. Griffith. Biography Beulah Dark Cloud was born Beulah T. Filson on March 28, 1887, in Lake George, New York, to Elijah "Dark Cloud" Tahamont and Margaret "Soaring Dove" Camp, who were members of the Abenaki tribe. Educated primarily in Montreal, Canada, she began performing at a young age. She was reported to be the first Native American student to attend New York's public schools when she enrolled at P.S. 45 in 1901. By 1912, she and her father had relocated to Los Angeles to appear in films directed by D. W. Griffith. Health problems eventually forced her to retire from acting. She died on December 29, 1945, in Thermolite, California. Dark Cloud (actor)
Dark Cloud (September 20, 1855 – September 17, 1918) was a First Nations silent film actor, born Elijah Tahamont. He was a chief of the Abenaki, a First Nations band government belonging to the Eastern Algonquian peoples of northeastern North America. Early life Tahamont's father, also named Elijah Tahamont, had studied at Moor's Charity School and Dartmouth College, where Native American education had been funded by a gift of £12,000 in 1767 from a Native American, Presbyterian Rev. Samson Occom. Moor's School had been established for "civilizing the wild, wandering Tribes of Indians in North America, and ... for promoting religion, virtue, and literature among people of all denominations." Tahamont became known first as a popular lecturer, and as a model for artist Frederic Remington, the most successful Western illustrator in the "Golden Age" of illustration at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Bertha Pallan Thurston Cody (née Parker; August 30, 1907 – October 8, 1978) was an American archaeologist, working as an assistant in archaeology at the Southwest Museum. She was also married to actor Iron Eyes Cody. She is thought to be the first Native American female archaeologist of Abenaki and Seneca descent. Early life Bertha (Yeawas) "Birdie" Parker was born in 1907 in Chautauqua County, New York. Abenaki
The Abenaki (Abenaki: ''Wαpánahki'') are an Indigenous peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands of Canada and the United States. They are an Algonquian-speaking people and part of the Wabanaki Confederacy. The Eastern Abenaki language was predominantly spoken in Maine, while the Western Abenaki language was spoken in Quebec, Vermont, and New Hampshire. While Abenaki peoples have shared cultural traits, they did not historically have a centralized government. They came together as a post-contact community after their original tribes were decimated by colonization, disease, and warfare. Names The word ''Abenaki'' and its syncope, ''Abnaki,'' are both derived from ''Wabanaki'', or ''Wôbanakiak,'' meaning "People of the Dawn Land" in the Abenaki language. Desert Gold (1919 Film)
''Desert Gold'' is a 1919 Australian horse racing melodrama from director Beaumont Smith starring the racehorse Desert Gold. It is considered to be a lost film. Plot John Forsythe and his trusty horse Desert Gold wander through the Australian outback, where Forsythe discovers a deposit of gold. A villain, Harrington, tries to steal Forsythe's claim, but is unsuccessful. Years later, Forsythe owns substantial horse racing interests, which are run by trainer, Anderson, who has a daughter, Joan (Marie Ney). Forsythe has a new champion race horse, also known as Desert Gold (played by the real-life Desert Gold). Harrington knows his horse, Slippery Jane, has no chance against Desert Gold, so he plays Anderson at cards and gets him into debt.
