Betty Kozai
Betty Kozai (October 12, 1928 – January 18, 2021) was an American curler from Seattle, Washington. Curling career Kozai won the US national championship in 1980, on a team skipped by her daughter Sharon. That team went on to finish in fourth place at that year's world championship. She returned to international competition at the age of 81, representing the United States at the 2010 World Senior Curling Championships. Personal life Kozai was a founding member of Granite Curling Club in Seattle, and curled there until the last years of her life. Her three daughters and four grandchildren have also been long-time curlers at Granite. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. United States Women's Curling Championship
The United States Women's Curling Championship is the annual women's national curling championship for the United States. It is run by the United States Curling Association (USCA) and typically held in conjunction with the Men's Curling Championship. The champions are eligible to represent the United States at the World Women's Curling Championships if they also rank in the top 75 teams over the last two seasons in the World Curling Tour Order of Merit or have earned 40 points in the Order of Merit year-to-date rankings. Skip (curling)
In the sport of curling, the skip is the captain of a team. The skip determines strategy, and holds the broom in the ''house'' (target area) to indicate where a teammate at the other end of the curling ''sheet'' (playing area) should aim the stone. The skip usually throws the last two stones in the fourth position, but may play in any other position. Sometimes "skipper" is used; it can also be abbreviated as "S". It's also used as a verb ("skips", "skipped", "skipping"). It is conventional to identify a team by the name of the skip. Sharon Vukich
Sharon Vukich is an American curler from Seattle, Washington. She is a two-time women's national Champion, two-time senior women's national champion, and one-time mixed doubles national champion. Curling career Vukich skipped her team to gold at the United States Championship twice, in 1980 and 1987. As champion she represented the United States at the World Championships those years, finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively. She returned to national prominence with back-to-back gold medals at the United States Senior Championships in 2009 and 2010. At World's they finished sixth and fourth places, respectively. In 2010 she also won the Mixed Doubles National Championship with teammate Mike Calcagno.
