Betchworth Railway Station
Betchworth railway station serves the village of Betchworth in Surrey, England. It is on the North Downs Line, measured from via . All services are operated by Great Western Railway. History The station was opened in 1849 by the Reading, Guildford and Reigate Railway, which became part of the South Eastern Railway in 1852. It is from , and has two platforms. The eastbound platform 1 is long enough for a four-coach train, but the westbound platform 2 can accommodate seven coaches. In 1967, Quentin Crisp starred in the sixteen-minute film ''The Even Tenour of her Ways'', which was shot at this railway station. In 2017/18 and 2018/19, it was the least used station in Surrey, after patronage at Longcross increased. Betchworth is a village and civil parish in the Mole Valley district of Surrey, England. The village centre is on the north bank of the River Mole and south of the A25 road, almost east of Dorking and west of Reigate. London is north of the village. Service sector occupations dominate Betchworth's economy – its station and road links make it a part of the London commuter belt – combined with crop agriculture and services for a relatively large retired proportion of the population. A former lime quarry, rebuilt manor house and Grade I-listed church are within its boundaries. Beamish Museum is the first regional open-air museum, in England, located at Beamish, near the town of Stanley, in County Durham, England. Beamish pioneered the concept of a living museum. ''Townsend Hook'' is a gauge Fletcher, Jennings & Co. steam locomotive built in 1880 for the Dorking Greystone Lime Co. as works no. 172L. ''Townsend Hook'' is cosmetically restored and based at Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre, West Sussex. Industrial Service In the late 1870s the Dorking Greystone Lime Co. of Betchworth, Surrey, decided there was a need for steam locomotives to work the horse drawn narrow gauge lines in their quarry. Following on from the success of their 1877 standard gauge Fletcher Jennings 0-4-0T No. 3 (later named ''Captain Baxter'', now preserved at the Bluebell Railway, they decided on Fletcher Jennings products again. Bluebell Railway
The Bluebell Railway is an heritage line almost entirely in West Sussex in England, except for Sheffield Park which is in East Sussex. It is managed by the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society. It uses steam trains which operate between and , with intermediate stations at and . It is the first preserved standard gauge steam-operated passenger railway in the world to operate a public service. The society ran its first train on 7 August 1960, less than three years after the line from East Grinstead to Lewes had been closed by British Railways.
