Besta Madang Fighters was a short-lived Papua New Guinea semi-professional football club founded in 2007, based in Madang. The club was founded as a new franchise ahead of the 2007–08 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, consisting predominantly from the local-level areas of the Madang province. The club finished 6th out of 7 sides that season, and failed to return the following season. History The club was founded shortly before the 2007–08 National Soccer League, and was the second Madang-based franchise to enter the competition after Madang FC's debut the previous season. The franchise was created to allow players from local-level government areas of the Madang province to get a taste of semi-professional football. Madang
Madang (old German name: ''Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen'') is the capital of Madang Province and is a town with a population of 27,420 (in 2005) on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. It was first settled by the Germans in the 19th century. History Russian biologist Nicholai Miklukho-Maklai was probably the first European to visit the area. In 1871 he stayed at Astrolabe Bay south of present-day Madang for 15 months. He had a good relationship with the local communities before leaving, suffering from malaria. The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. 2007–08 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The 2007–08 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship purposes, was the second edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by PRK Hekari United, who picked up their second title. The Golden Boot was won by Hekari's Kema Jack, who scored 15 goals, while the Player of the Season award was shared by Ian Yanum of Welgris Highlanders and Ila Ilaita Jr of Gelle Hills. Teams Seven teams entered the competition, an expansion from the previous season's five. Earlier in the year, there had been interest from further clubs, with the most notable being PS Rutz, who had competed for several years alongside Rapatona in the Port Moresby Premier League. Madang Football Club, formerly known as Madang Flying Fox, Madang Niupetro Fox or simply Madang Fox, was a Papua New Guinea football club, based in Madang. The club was one of the founding members of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League in 2006, alongside Hekari United, Morobe FC, Gelle Hills and Welgris Highlanders, and are the only founding member still participating in the division, due to clubs folding or defecting to the rival Papua New Guinea National Premier League. Rapatona Football Club, formerly known as Inspac Rapatona FC, CMSS Rapatona Tigers FC, Moresby Casino Hotel and currently referred to as PKA Rapatona FC for sponsorship reasons, is a Papua New Guinea football club, based in Port Moresby and founded in 1982. The club was one of the earliest teams that competed in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, joining the league in its second season in 2007–08, and never failing to qualify for the championship playoffs in their four years of competition, reaching the Grand Final in the 2008–09 season. They were one of five founding members of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, but reached the knockout stages just once in four years of competing.
