Bernt Støylen
Bernt Andreas Støylen (17 February 1858–18 November 1937) was a Norwegian theologian, psalmist, and Bishop in the Church of Norway. Personal life Støylen was born in Sande in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway on 17 February 1858. He was the son of farmer and fisherman Andreas Olsen Støylen and Margrete Helgesdatter Bringsvor. He was married in Bergen in 1890 to Kamilla Karoline Heiberg. His son was Kaare Støylen, a future bishop, and his brother-in-law was Georg Sverdrup, the Norwegian-American theologian. He died in Bærum, Norway in 1937. Career Støylen graduated from a teaching school in Volda in 1875. After some time as a teacher, he took his examen artium in 1879. He then went on to study theology at the University of Oslo, receiving his Cand.theol. degree in 1885. He began his career as a curate in the Johannes Church parish in Bergen from 1887-1890. Church Of Norway
The Church of Norway ( nb, Den norske kirke, nn, Den norske kyrkja, se, Norgga girku, sma, Nöörjen gærhkoe) is an evangelical Lutheran denomination of Protestant Christianity and by far the largest Christian church in Norway. Kaare Støylen
Kaare Støylen (3 October 1909 – 22 August 1989) was a Norwegian theologian and priest. He served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Agder from 1957-1973. Personal life Kaare Støylen was born in Aker, Norway on 3 October 1909. He was the son of Bernt Støylen, the future Bishop of Kristiansand, and his wife Kamilla Karoline Heiberg. In 1932, he married Agnes Louise Rosario Stray, however she died in 1943. He then married Honoria Margrethe Faye in 1945. Kaare Støylen died on 22 August 1989 in Bergen, Norway. Education and career Kaare Støylen went to the Kristiansand Cathedral School in 1927. He went on to the University of Oslo, graduating in 1932 with a Cand.theol. degree. Notodden
Notodden () is a List of towns and cities in Norway, city and List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Vestfold og Telemark Counties of Norway, county, Norway. St John's Church, Bergen
St. John's Church ( no, Johanneskirken) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Bergen Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the Sydnes area of the city of Bergen. It is one of the five churches for the Bergen Cathedral parish which is part of the Bergen domprosti (arch- deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. A curate () is a person who is invested with the ''care'' or ''cure'' (''cura'') ''of souls'' of a parish. In this sense, "curate" means a parish priest; but in English-speaking countries the term ''curate'' is commonly used to describe clergy who are assistants to the parish priest. Examen artium was the name of the academic certification conferred in Denmark and Norway, qualifying the student for admission to university studies. Examen artium was originally introduced as the entrance exam of the University of Copenhagen in 1630.
