Bernardo Ashetu
Bernardo Ashetu (4 March 1929 – 3 August 1982) was a Surinamese poet. Biography Henk van Ommeren was born on the edge of Paramaribo as the son of doctor Hendrik van Ommeren who would later become Chairman of the Estates of Suriname. His son did not want to go to fancy schools and universities, he would later become telegraphist, and sailor, and travel all over the world's oceans. In 1959, van Ommeren settled in the Netherlands and started writing. In 1962, van Ommeren made his debut ''Yanacuna'' in the series ''Antilliaanse Cahiers'' under the pseudonym Bernardo Ashetu. Cola Debrot introduced him: "The title refers to the name of an Indian class of serfs, the Yanacuna, who were increasingly driven from their land and family after the destruction of the Inca society by the conquistadors." Tammenga
Tammenga is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District Paramaribo is a district of Suriname, encompassing the capital city of Paramaribo and the surrounding area. Paramaribo district has a population of 240,924, almost half the population of the entire country, and an area of 182 km2. The .... Its population at the 2012 census was 15,819. The resort has been named after Henderijkes Tammenga (1815-1864), who after his first plantation did not succeed, started farming in a swampy area near Paramaribo in 1852. Yanakuna
Yanakuna were originally individuals in the Inca Empire who left the ayllu system and worked full-time at a variety of tasks for the Inca, the ''quya'' (Inca queen), or the religious establishment. A few members of this serving class enjoyed high social status and were appointed officials by the Sapa Inca. They could own property and sometimes had their own farms, before and after the conquest. The Spanish continued the yanakuna tradition developing it further as yanakuna entered Spanish service as Indian auxiliaries or encomienda Indians. Etymology and spelling The word ''yana'' in Quechua, the main Inca language, means black, servant, and is possibly derived from the verb ''yanapa'' to help, Qosqo Quechua, ''yana'', black, servant, partner, spouse, and paramour. The ''-kuna'' suffix in yanakuna indicates the plural, thus if ''yana'' is translated as "servant" yanakuna is "servants" or "slaves". Gerrit Jan Komrij (30 March 1944 – 5 July 2012) was a Dutch poet, novelist, translator, critic, polemic journalist and playwright. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s writing poetry that sharply contrasted with the free-form poetry of his contemporaries. He acquired a reputation for his prose in the late 1970s, writing acerbic essays and columns often critical of writers, television programs, and politicians. As a literary critic and especially as an anthologist he had a formative influence on Dutch literature: his 1979 anthology of Dutch poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries reformed the canon, and was followed by anthologies of Dutch poetry of the 17th and 18th centuries, of Afrikaans poetry, and of children's poetry. De Ware Tijd
''De Ware Tijd'' (English: The True Time) is one of four daily newspapers in Paramaribo, Suriname. , it was the largest-circulation paper in the country, ahead of its rival, ''De West'', and was described as taking a "staunchly independent stance" politically. It is published in the Dutch language, and privately owned. The '' Kondreman'' cartoon is published by the newspaper since 2005. 'Taxi' was published earlier. Hugo Pos
Hugo Pos (November 28, 1913 in Paramaribo – November 11, 2000 in Amsterdam) was a Surinamese judge, writer, and poet. Biography Hugo Pos was born in Paramaribo. Raymond was his older brother. In 1925, he left Suriname for the Netherlands to study at the grammar school and later Leiden University, and continued his studies in Paris. In 1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands, and because Pos was Jewish, he tried to escape. His second attempt was successful and Pos managed to reach California via Finland, Russia and Japan. He then decided to go to the United Kingdom to enlist in the army. In 1944, Pos joined the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration, and prosecuted "minor war crimes" for the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Japan. Pos was back in the Netherlands in 1948, however he decided to return to his native country of Suriname in 1950 where he was appointed as judge and attorney general.
