The Bergen Woodwind Quintet is a well-known woodwind quintet based in Bergen, Norway. The ensemble's members are the principal wind musicians of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, also known as Harmonien, which was founded in 1765 and is one of the world's oldest orchestral institutions. The quintet often conducts worldwide tours, performing for live audiences, conducting radio broadcasts, and holding master classes for music students. Woodwind instruments are a family of musical instruments within the greater category of wind instruments. Common examples include flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and saxophone. There are two main types of woodwind instruments: flutes and reed instruments (otherwise called reed pipes). Steinar Baldursson, known by the mononym Steinar (born 1995) is a singer and songwriter. Steinar was born in Grafarvogur, a district of Reykjavík. Fredrik Fors (born 1973, Borlänge) is a Swedish, classical music clarinetist.Booklet accompanying the Harmonia Mundi CD HMN911853. His album in the Juventus ''Les Nouveaux Musiciens'' series has been described as "one of the finest recitals of its kind". Early studies and career Fredrik Fors began playing clarinet at the age of 10 in the music school of his native town. At 15 he made his debut as soloist in the Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 5, by Bernhard Crusell with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. A quintet is a group containing five members. It is commonly associated with musical groups, such as a string quintet, or a group of five singers, but can be applied to any situation where five similar or related objects are considered a single unit. Overview In classical instrumental music, any additional instrument (such as a piano, clarinet, oboe, etc.) joined to the usual string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello), gives the resulting ensemble its name, such as " piano quintet", " clarinet quintet", etc. A piece of music written for such a group is similarly named. Gro Schibsted Sandvik (born 2 October 1942 in Sarpsborg, Norway) is a Norwegian flautist. Career Sandvik is a member of the Bergen Woodwind Quintet and served as solo flutist in the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 until 2005. She has an active career as soloist and chamber music performer, which includes premier performances of many works written especially for her, and the Scandinavian premier of John Corigliano's ''Concerto for Flute''. She had private studies with Marcel Moyse. She holds a professorship in music performance at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen.
