Benton College Of Law
Benton College of Law was a law school in St. Louis, Missouri. It opened in as Kent School of Law, and incorporated as Benton School of Law in 1897. George L. Corlis was its dean. James Avery Webb helped establish the school. The school initially only offered night classes. In 1899, an act of the Missouri legislature allowed graduates to be admitted to the Missouri bar without taking the bar exam. By 1921, the college was offering both day and night classes. It closed in 1937. Several documents related to the college are extant including copies of addresses given to graduating classes. Henry S. Priest spoke to the graduating class in 1914. Bar Examination
A bar examination is an examination administered by the bar association of a jurisdiction that a lawyer must pass in order to be admitted to the bar of that jurisdiction. Australia Administering bar exams is the responsibility of the bar association in the particular state or territory concerned. Those interested in pursuing a career at the bar must first be admitted as lawyers in the Supreme Court of their home state or territory. This generally requires the completion of legal studies which can take up to 8 years depending on the mode of study, the particular degree being completed and the law school. Richard F. Ralph (August 31, 1869 - October 2, 1949) was an American politician from Valley Park, Missouri, who served in the Missouri Senate as Republican floor. John Keating Regan (March 26, 1911 – March 9, 1987) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. Education and career Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Regan received a Bachelor of Laws from Benton College of Law (now defunct) in 1934. He was in private practice in St. Louis from 1935 to 1939, and was an assistant prosecuting attorney of St. Louis from 1939 to 1942. Marion Charles Matthes (January 29, 1906 – November 30, 1980) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Education and career Born in De Soto, Missouri, Matthes attended Benton College of Law (now defunct), and read law in 1928 to enter the bar. He was in private practice in DeSoto and Hillsboro, Missouri from 1928 to 1955. He was deputy state finance commissioner in 1929, and was a city attorney for DeSoto from 1938 to 1940. In 1942, he was elected to the Missouri Senate, where he served until 1950. He was a member of the Missouri State Highway Commission from 1954 to 1955. Amabel Anderson Arnold LL.M. (May 31, 1883 – February 18, 1936) was an American lawyer and law professor who organized the Woman's State Bar Association of Missouri, the first association of women lawyers in the world. Early life Amabel Anderson was born in Chatham, Ontario, on May 31, 1883. Her father was a natural-born United States citizen and her mother belonged to the Burgess family, of English ancestry, known among the most progressive people of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia - well educated, prosperous and of sterling quality. She had one brother, Charles. The Andersons moved to London, Ontario where Anderson attended her first two years of primary education. Summers and the Christmas seasons were spent at their mother's old home near Aylmer, Ontario. Later the family moved to Michigan, where public school wasn't as progressive as it had been in Canada. Jacob Edwin Meeker
Jacob Edwin Meeker (October 7, 1878 – October 16, 1918) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. Background Born near Attica, Indiana, Meeker attended the public schools. He graduated from Union Christian College, Merom, Indiana, in 1900, and from Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1904. While a student at Union Christian College he became pastor of a rural church in Vermilion County, Illinois. He was ordained as a minister in 1901 and assumed his duties in Vermilion County. He was a missionary in Eldon, Missouri, for the Congregational Church in 1904. He moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1906 to take charge of the Compton Hill Congregational Church. He resigned in 1912. He studied law at Benton College of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1914.
