Bent Fuglede
Bent Fuglede (born 8 October 1925) is a Danish mathematician and, since 1992, professor emeritus at the University of Copenhagen. Biography He is known for his contributions to mathematical analysis, in particular functional analysis, where he has proved Fuglede's theorem and stated Fuglede's conjecture. Fuglede graduated from Skt. Jørgens Gymnasium 1943 and received his mag. scient. og cand. mag. in 1948 at the University of Copenhagen after which he studied in USA until 1951. ÓlafÃa Einarsdóttir
ÓlafÃa Einarsdóttir (28 July 1924 – 19 December 2017) was an Icelandic archaeologist and historian, specialising in Icelandic chronology. She was the first Icelander to complete a degree in archaeology. After completing her PhD from Lund University in 1964, she taught at the University of Copenhagen and published many works about Icelandic sagas and Viking history. Early life ÓlafÃa was born in Hafnafjördur, a suburb of ReykjavÃk, on 28 July 1924. Her parents were Einar Þorkelsson, Secretary General of the Althing, and ÓlafÃa Guðmundsdóttir. One of six children, her mother died in childbirth when ÓlafÃa was five; soon after her father became blind. She was then adopted by some friends of her mother's and raised by them. The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, and serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs. The society is one of the four parts of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics and a member of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences. History The AMS was founded in 1888 as the New York Mathematical Society, the brainchild of Thomas Fiske, who was impressed by the London Mathematical Society on a visit to England. John Howard Van Amringe was the first president and Fiske became secretary. Børge Jessen
Børge Christian Jessen (19 June 1907 – 20 March 1993) was a Denmark, Danish mathematician best known for his work in Mathematical analysis, analysis, specifically on the Riemann zeta function, and in geometry, specifically on Hilbert's third problem. Early years Jessen was born on 19 June 1907 in Copenhagen to Hans Jessen and Christine Jessen (née Larsen). He attended Skt. Jørgens Gymnasium, where he was taught by the Hungarian mathematician Julius Pal during his first year. In 1925, Jessen graduated from the gymnasium and enrolled at the University of Copenhagen. During his time at the university he got to know Harald Bohr, then a leading figure in Danish mathematics. In 1928, Bohr established a collaboration with Jessen, which would last until Bohr's death in 1951. After receiving his master's degree in the spring of 1929, Jessen embarked on a stay abroad.
