Benno Premsela Prize
The Benno Premsela Prize is a former Dutch design prize, awarded every two years from 2000 to 2012 by the Mondriaan Fonds to a person who has played a stimulating role in the field of visual arts, design or architecture. The prize is named after designer Benno Premsela, who died in 1997, and who himself had played a central role in post-war Dutch art and design. The prize consisted of a sum of money of 40,000 euros. Design Prize
A design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system or for the implementation of an activity or process or the result of that plan or specification in the form of a prototype, product, or process. The verb ''to design'' expresses the process of developing a design. In some cases, the direct construction of an object without an explicit prior plan (such as in craftwork, some engineering, coding, and graphic design) may also be considered to be a design activity. The design usually has to satisfy certain goals and constraints; may take into account aesthetic, functional, economic, or socio-political considerations; and is expected to interact with a certain environment. Mondriaan Fonds
Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan (), after 1906 known as Piet Mondrian (, also , ; 7 March 1872 – 1 February 1944), was a Dutch painter and art theoretician who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art, as he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements. Mondrian's art was highly utopian and was concerned with a search for universal values and aesthetics. He proclaimed in 1914: "Art is higher than reality and has no direct relation to reality. Visual Arts
The visual arts are art forms such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts and architecture. Many artistic disciplines such as performing arts, conceptual art, and textile arts also involve aspects of visual arts as well as arts of other types. Riekje Swart
Hendrika (Riekje) Swart (1 August 1923 in George Town, Penang, Malaysia – 27 September 2008 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch gallery owner of Gallery Swart in Amsterdam from 1964 until 2000. She was awarded the Benno Premsela Prize in 2002 for her contribution to the development of visual arts in the Netherlands. Renny Ramakers
Renny Ramakers is a Dutch art historian, curator, design critic, and co-founder and director of the Droog design foundation. Ramakers writes articles, gives lectures, initiates projects and curates exhibitions in the field of art and design. In 2007 she was awarded the Benno Premsela Prize, in 2019 the IJprijs for her cultural contribution to the city of Amsterdam, and in 2018 she received a Dutch Royal Award for her work in the field of Dutch Design. Life and work Ramakers graduated in art history at the University of Leiden in 1982. Her graduation work published in 1984 was about the Nederlandsche Bond voor Kunst in Industrie, a Dutch union for arts and crafts and industrial design. Gijs Bakker
Gijs Bakker (Amersfoort, 20 February 1942) is a Dutch jewellery and industrial-designer, educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm, Sweden. Bakker's designs cover jewellery, home accessories and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces and exhibitions. He worked and works for numerous companies amongst which are Polaroid, Artifort, HEMA, Royal VKB, and ENO Studio. Bakker is widower of the jewellery designer Emmy van Leersum. In 1993 he founded Droog Design together with design critic and historian Renny Ramakers, a Dutch collective of designers, products and information. Suzanne Oxenaar
Suzanne Oxenaar (born 1950s-1960s) is a Dutch cultural entrepreneur, designer and co-founder and artistic director of the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. Biography Oxenaar is the daughter of Rudi Oxenaar, former director of the Kröller-Müller Museum, and Thil Oxenaar-van der Haagen (1931-1985). Her brother Aart Oxenaar (1958) is director of the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. Oxenaar came into prominence in the late 1980s with the renovation of an old Amsterdam theater into an art center.
