Benjamin Bidlack
Benjamin Alden Bidlack (September 8, 1804 – February 6, 1849) was an American politician, diplomat, and attorney who served as a member of the US House of Representatives and was later appointed chargé d'affaires to New Granada. While serving in New Granada he negotiated an agreement later known as the Mallarino–Bidlack Treaty. This treaty was the only instance in the nineteenth-century where the United States committed to defend the sovereignty of a Latin American state at the request of that state. The pact helped pave the way for the construction of the Panama Canal. Early life and education Bidlack was born in Paris, New York, the son of Benjamin Bidlack, a pioneer farmer, and Lydia Alden Bidlack. Paris is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The town is in the southeast part of the county and is south of Utica. The population was 4,411 at the 2010 census. The town was named after an early benefactor, Colonel Isaac Paris. History The town was formed in 1792 from part of the town of Whitestown. Miami People
The Miami ( Miami-Illinois: ''Myaamiaki'') are a Native American nation originally speaking one of the Algonquian languages. Among the peoples known as the Great Lakes tribes, they occupied territory that is now identified as North-central Indiana, southwest Michigan, and western Ohio. The Miami were historically made up of several prominent subgroups, including the Piankeshaw, Wea, Pepikokia, Kilatika, Mengakonkia, and Atchakangouen. In modern times, Miami is used more specifically to refer to the Atchakangouen. By 1846, most of the Miami had been forcefully displaced to Indian Territory (initially to what is now Kansas, and later to what is now part of Oklahoma). James Gerry Jr. (August 14, 1796 – July 19, 1873) was an American politician and physician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1839 to 1843, representing the 11th congressional district of Pennsylvania as a Democrat in the 26th United States Congress and the 27th United States Congress. Early life and education Gerry was born near Rising Sun, Maryland on August 14, 1796 to James Gerry Sr. and Florah (Low) Gerry. He graduated from West Nottingham Academy and studied medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Maryland before commencing practice in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania in 1824. Career Gerry was elected as a Democrat to both the 26th United States Congress and the 27th United States Congress. Henry Nes
Henry Nes (May 20, 1799 – September 10, 1850) was an American medical doctor and politician. Biography Nes was born in York, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Princeton College (the New Jersey institution which changed its name to Princeton University in 1896). After his graduation he studied medicine, and then returned to York to practice. Political career Nes ran as an Independent Democrat for one of the Pennsylvania seats in the US House of Representatives in the 28th United States Congress (1842). He was successful, and served from 1843 to 1845. In 1846 Nes ran as a Whig candidate for the same seat in the 30th United States Congress and was elected. In 1848 he ran for re-election, and was again successful. Nes served in the 31st United States Congress from March until September 1850, when he died in office. Manuel María Mallarino Ibargüen (18 June 1808 – 6 January 1872) was the 8th Vice President of New Granada, and as such served as Acting President from 1855 to 1857. Personal life Manuel María was born on 18 June 1808 in Santiago de Cali, then part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, the oldest child of José María Mallarino y Vargas, a Spaniard natural of Cádiz of Italian descent, and Juana María de la Concepción Ibargüen (née Scarpetta Roo y Bedoya), a Criolla natural of Cali also of Italian descent.
