Benewah-class Barracks Ship
The ''Benewah''-class barracks ship was a class of barracks ships of the United States Navy after the Second World War, in the late 1940s. Development Thirteen ships were converted into repair ships throughout the later stages of World War II. The ships were converted from the LST-1 class tank landing ship, LST-1 and LST-542-class tank landing ship, LST-542 classes. After the war, a few ships were then sold to the Philippines and Indonesia. The ship's hulls remained nearly the same but with new equipment to carry out their purpose were placed on deck alongside several cranes. The ships' armament was slightly changed and relocated to make way for the ships' equipment. All ships served in the Pacific War, Pacific Theater until the end of the war with no ships lost in combat. USS Nueces, APL-40 (ex-USS Nueces) is still active to this day, serving as a transport and berthing vessel for the United States Navy in United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Yokosuka. Boston Navy Yard
The Boston Navy Yard, originally called the Charlestown Navy Yard and later Boston Naval Shipyard, was one of the oldest shipbuilding facilities in the United States Navy. It was established in 1801 as part of the recent establishment of the new U.S. Department of the Navy in 1798. After 175 years of military service, it was decommissioned as a naval installation on 1 July 1974. The property is administered by the National Park Service, becoming part of Boston National Historical Park. Ship history Authorized to be built as APL-38 on 17 December 1943, ''Marlboro'' was redesignated APB-38 on 8 August 1944. She was laid down by the Boston Navy Yard at Boston, Massachusetts, on 25 August 1944 and launched on 17 November 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Marjorie Guile. ''Marlboro'' was commissioned 18 August 1945. USS ''Echols'' (APB-37) is a ''Benewah''-class barracks ship of the United States Navy. Construction and career The ship was laid down on 11 August 1944, by the Boston Navy Yard and launched on 30 July 1945, sponsored by Miss Dorothy O'Brien. She was commissioned in January 1947. The ship was put into the inactive in commissioned status as ''Echols'' (APB-37) at Atlantic Reserve Fleet, 6th Naval District from January 1947 until 1961, where she was to Norfolk. Echols was later towed to Groton to accommodate submarine crews at the Naval Submarine Base New London. In 1971, she was re-designated as IX-504. USS ''Benewah'' (APB-35) was a barracks ship of the United States Navy, and lead ship of her class. She was notable for her service in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. Launch ''Benewah'' (APB-35) was laid down on 2 January 1945, by the Boston Navy Yard and launched on 6 May 1945, sponsored by Miss Priscilla Underwood. She was commissioned on 19 March 1946. Atlantic service Following outfitting, ''Benewah'' remained at Boston serving with the Atlantic Reserve Fleet as a barracks ship for the crews of aircraft carriers going out of commission.
