Etheldred Benett
Etheldred Anna Maria Benett (22 July 1776 – 11 January 1845) was an early English geologist often credited with being the first female geologist, having devoted much of her life to collecting and studying fossils that she discovered in South West England. She worked closely with many principal geologists and her fossil collection, considered one of the largest at the time, played a part in the development of geology as a field of science. Early life Etheldred Anna Maria Benett was born in 1776 (or 1775) into a wealthy family as the second daughter of Thomas Benett (1729–1797) of Wiltshire and Catherine ''née'' Darell (d. 1790). Her maternal great grandfather was William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury. Her elder brother John was member of Parliament for Wiltshire and later South Wiltshire from 1819 to 1852; his daughter married Lord Charles Spencer-Churchill. Sarah Benett
Sarah Barbara Benett (1850 – 8 February 1924) was a suffragette, a member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) and Treasurer of the Women's Freedom League (WFL). She was one of the "Brown Women" who walked from Edinburgh to London in 1912 and went on hunger strike during her imprisonment in Holloway Prison for which she received the WSPU's Hunger Strike Medal and Holloway brooch. Early life Sarah Benett was born in St Pancras in London in 1850, one of nine children born to William Morgan Benett (1813–1891), a solicitor, and Barbara Sarah Waring (1819–1894). Before Sarah Benett became involved in fighting for women's suffrage she was active in social reform. She founded a co-operative society in the village she grew up in, in the New Forest in Hampshire. Léon Benett (born Hippolyte Léon Benet; 1839–1916) was a French painter and illustrator. He was born in Orange, Provence. He changed his name to "Léon Benett" to differentiate his career in the French administration from his work as a draftsman. Benett is the most important illustrator of books written by Jules Verne; between 1873 and 1910 he illustrated twenty-five novels from the Voyages Extraordinaires series. He also illustrated other books by Verne. He also illustrated works of Victor Hugo, Leo Tolstoy, Thomas Mayne Reid, André Laurie, Camille Flammarion, and others. Vere Fane Benett-Stanford (1840–1894) was an English politician. Early life Vere Fane Benett-Stanford was born Vere Fane in 1840. His father was Reverend Arthur Fane of the Fane family and his mother, Anna Maria Benett, the daughter of John Benett (1773–1852). He grew up at the family country house of Pythouse near Tisbury, Wiltshire. He took his maternal grandfather's name, becoming known as Vere Fane Benett. Career He was a Major and later Colonel in the British Army. He served as Conservative Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury from 1873 to 1880. Personal life In October 1867, he married Elen Stanford, whose late father, William Stanford, had served as High Sheriff of Sussex in 1808.
