Beneden-Leeuwen
Beneden-Leeuwen is a town in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Maas en Waal, and lies about 7 km east of Tiel, on the opposite (southern) bank of the river Waal. Beneden-Leeuwen has 6,925 inhabitants on 1 July 2021. It is the Catholic part of the former village Leeuwen. History It was first called Beneden-Leeuwen in 1986 to distinguish from Boven-Leeuwen. Leeuwen was first attested in the 12th century as Lewen, and means "settlement near burial hill". The village developed along the Waal. In 1898, a Catholic Church was built in Beneden-Leeuwen, and the village split in a Catholic (beneden) and a Protestant (boven) village. The St. Alphonsus de Liguori Church was built between 1898 and 1900. In 1840, the entire village of Leeuwen was home to 2,128 people. Windmill De Wielewaal is a grist mill built in 1857. De Wielewaal, Beneden-Leeuwen
De Wielewaal ( en, The Mule) is a tower mill in Beneden-Leeuwen, Gelderland, Netherlands which was built in 1857 and is in working order. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''De Wielewaal'' was built in 1857. It is similar in construction to Zeldenrust, Oss and De Nijverheid, Ravenstein. The three mills were probably built by the same millwright. In the 1930s, improvements were made to the mill. The speed of the millstones was increased by introducing smaller stone nuts. The mill was restored in 1967. In 1999, repairs were done to the sails and stage. The mill was sold to the Gemeente West Maas en Waal in 2002. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, No. 38428. Boven-Leeuwen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Maas en Waal, and lies about 9 km east of Tiel. It is the protestant part of the former village of Leeuwen. History It was first called Boven-Leeuwen in 1986 to distinguish from Beneden-Leeuwen. Leeuwen was first attested in the 12th century as Lewen, and means "settlement near burial hill". The village developed along the Waal. In 1898, a Catholic church was built in Beneden-Leeuwen, and the village split in a Catholic (beneden) and a Protestant (boven) village. The Dutch Reformed church was built between 1753 and 1756. Arno van Zwam (born 16 September 1969) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for several clubs, most notably Fortuna Sittard. Van Zwam made his debut in professional football playing for the Fortuna Sittard squad in the 1992. Julian Sas (born 29 May 1970) is a Dutch blues rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He has released almost 20 studio albums since 1996, with the most recent being the double CD release, ''Electracoustic'' on Cavalier Records. Life and career He was born in Beneden-Leeuwen, Netherlands, on a boat on the river Waal, and spent his early years living on a vessel moored there. When Sas was six years old, he saw Chuck Berry perform on television and Sas dreamt about owning a guitar. Later when he was eleven, he viewed Jimi Hendrix via the same medium and, after persisent asking, was given a guitar of his own a year later. Hanneke Hoefnagel
Hanneke Hoefnagel (born 12 October 1988) is a former Dutch gymnast, whose favorite discipline was the beam, but who contributed an eponymous element to the sport on the uneven bars. Career Early career Hoefnagel was born in Beneden-Leeuwen and started her career in gymnastics in 1993 at a local team in the same city. In 1996 she joined one of the most prestigious club teams in the Netherlands, Nijmegen based GTV De Hazenkamp. She started off in the youth squads, but found herself in the top sport squad of coach Boris Orlov since 1999. Marcus Gerhardus Theodorus (Marco) Pastors (born 10 September 1965) is a Dutch civil servant and former politician. Since 1 February 2012 he has been director of the Nationaal Programma Kwaliteitssprong Zuid, a project of the city of Rotterdam to improve living conditions in the south of Rotterdam. Jona Lendering (born 29 October 1964) is a Dutch historian and the author of books on antiquity, Dutch history and modern management. He has an MA in history from Leiden University and an MA in Mediterranean culture from the Amsterdam Free University, taught history at the Free University, and worked as an archivist employed by the Dutch government, before becoming one of the founders of the history school Livius Onderwijs. Tiel
Tiel () is a municipality and a town in the middle of the Netherlands. The town is enclosed by the Waal river and the Linge river to the South and the North, and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal to the East. Tiel comprises the population centres Kapel-Avezaath, Tiel and Wadenoijen. The city was founded in the 5th century CE. The town of Tiel Tiel is the largest town in the Betuwe area, which is famous for being one of the centres of Dutch fruit production. Orchards in the area produce apples, pears, plums and cherries. Waal (river)
The Waal (Dutch name, ) is the main distributary branch of the river Rhine flowing approximately through the Netherlands. It is the major waterway connecting the port of Rotterdam to Germany. Before it reaches Rotterdam, it joins with the Afgedamde Maas near Woudrichem to form the Boven Merwede. Along its length, Nijmegen, Tiel, Zaltbommel and Gorinchem are towns of importance with direct access to the river.
