Benbecula Records
Benbecula Records was a Scottish independent record label. Established in 1999 in Edinburgh, Scotland, by local musicians Phase 6 and Beluga, Benbecula Records began as a CD-R-based record label before moving towards large-run commercial vinyl record and CD releases in 2000. The label closed on 1 November 2009. Biography Traditionally, Benbecula Records embodied the Scottish electronic music scene, releasing the works of local artists Christ., Reverbaphon, Frog Pocket, Genaro and Operator. Later on, Benbecula Records increasingly represented artists from abroad, particularly Canadian musician Prhizzm, American free jazz artist Brian Ellis, German producer E.Stonji, and English musicians Birdengine, Ochre and Damien Shingleton. Ochre is the stage name of English electronic musician Christopher Leary. The name "Ochre" was originally adopted as the title for Leary's academic work while studying audio production at Newcastle College, as a variation of "Oaker", being the name of a street in Manchester where Leary spent his early childhood. He currently resides in The Hague. Leary also holds a Master's degree in music. Lawry Joseph Tilbury, also known as Birdengine, is an English musician, producer and singer-songwriter . Career In 2005, Tilbury released his debut EP ''Birdengine'', a collection of experimental tape melodies, on the now defunct Scottish label Benbecula Records. The self-produced EP was hailed as "the first relevant work of freak-folktronica" by Stylus Magazine.
