Belur is a first-grade town panchayat in the Vazhapadi taluk of Salem district, in Tamil Nadu, India. Geography Belur is within Vazhapadi taluk, which is in the central part of the district. It covers in the eastern part of the taluk, near the border with Attur taluk. It is north of Vazhapadi, the taluk headquarters, east of Salem, the district headquarters, and southwest of the state capital of Chennai. Belur is just south of the Kalrayan Hills, part of the Eastern Ghats. The town is within the drainage basin of the Vellar River, and the Anaimuduvu River, a tributary of the Vellar, flows through the town during the wet season. Tamil Nadu State Highway 160 runs through Belur. Demographics In 2011, Belur had a population of 8,736 people living in 2,290 households. Vazhapadi (Valapady, or Valappadi) is a town panchayat in Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of Vazhapadi taluk, one of the 13 taluks of Salem district. Geography Vazhapadi is within Vazhapadi taluk, which is the central part of Salem district. It covers in the eastern part of the taluk, near the border with Attur taluk. National Highway 79 passes to the south of the town, and the only railroad line in the taluk runs through the town. The Vellar River is a river in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It originates in the Kalrayan Hills, and flows generally eastward through Salem, Perambalur, and Cuddalore districts, before flowing into the Bay of Bengal near Parangipettai. The Eastern Ghats are a discontinuous range of mountains along India's eastern coast. Kalrayan Hills
The Kalvarayan Hills are a major range of hills situated in the Eastern Ghats of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Along with the Pachaimalai, Alavaimalai, Javadi, and Shevaroy hills, they separate the Kaveri River basin to the south from the Palar River basin to the north. The hills range in height from 2000 feet to 3000 feet and extend over an area of 1095 square kilometres. The hills straddle a number of Tamil Nadu districts, extending northeast from the Salem District. The range serves as a boundary between the Salem and Kallakurichi districts. The Kalrayans are divided into two sections — the northern section, referred to as the Chinna ("little") Kalrayans, and the southern section, called the Periya ("big") Kalrayans. Attur Taluk is one of the ''taluks'', or administrative division of Salem District in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The division's headquarters is Attur town. Background Attur Taluk is surrounded by Gangavalli Taluk on east and Pethanaickenpalayam Taluk on the west. Recently, the railway station was rebuilt and the tracks expanded to accommodate a broad gauge. Train services run from Viruthachalam to Salem, and from Attur to Chennai. A nagar panchayat (town panchayat; ) or Notified Area Council (NAC) in India is a settlement in transition from rural to urban and therefore a form of an urban political unit comparable to a municipality.
