Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. The 1932 Winter Olympics, officially known as the III Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as Lake Placid 1932, were a winter multi-sport event in the United States, held in Lake Placid, New York, United States. The games opened on February 4 and closed on February 13. It was the first of four Winter Olympics held in the United States; Lake Placid hosted again in 1980. The games were awarded to Lake Placid in part by the efforts of Godfrey Dewey, head of the Lake Placid Club and son of Melvil Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal System. Max Houben (5 May 1898 – 10 February 1949) was a Belgian versatile athlete who competed from the early 1920s until his death at the 1949 FIBT World Championships. He won a silver medal in the four-man bobsled event at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, and was the oldest medalist at the Winter Olympics (48 years, 278 days) until Canadian Russ Howard won a gold medal in men's curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin (50 years, 7 days). Athletics career Houben was national champion in the 100 m. He also made it to the quarterfinals of the 200 m event and the semifinals of the 4 × 100 m relay at the 1920 Summer Olympics. Louis Van Hege (8 May 1889 – 24 June 1975) was a Belgian footballer who played as an inside-forward. Club career At club level, Van Hege played for Italian side A.C. Milan from 1910 to 1915, scoring 97 goals during five Italian Football Championship seasons with the ''rossoneri'', and also serving as the club's captain. In terms of goals scored, he's the tenth-highest goalscorer in the club's history. He left Italy when the First World War began. Yvonne de Ligne (née ''Geurts'', 18 May 1902 – 1952) was a Belgian figure skater. She competed in the ladies singles event at all major competitions from 1929 to 1936, including Winter Olympics, world and European championships. Her best achievements were sixth place at the 1929 and 1932 world championships and 1932 Olympics, and fifth place at the 1933 European Championships. She was born Yvonne Geurts, and changed her last name after marrying speed skater Charles de Ligne.
