Belgian Open (tennis)
The Belgian Open was a WTA Tour tennis event held over three different periods during 1987–2002. The competition took place in July during 1987–1989 and 2002, and in May during 1992–1993 and 1999–2001. 2000 and 2001 it was sponsored by Dutch clothing chain Mexx and renamed the ''Benelux Open''. The competition was played on outdoor clay courts. The tournament was a Tier V event in 1992 and 2001, and a Tier IV event in 1993, 1999, 2000 and 2002. Only one Belgian woman won the singles event; the then little-known Justine Henin, aged 16 in 1999. However, Sabine Appelmans, Kim Clijsters and Els Callens all won the doubles event. WTA Tour
The WTA Tour is a worldwide top-tier tennis tour for women organized by the Women's Tennis Association. The second-tier tour is the WTA 125K series, and third-tier is the ITF Women's Circuit. The men's equivalent is the ATP Tour. Bettina Bunge
Bettina Bunge (born 13 June 1963) is a retired German tennis player. Born in Adliswil, Switzerland, she was part of a large group of successful German players in the 1980s, which also included Steffi Graf, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Sylvia Hanika, and Eva Pfaff. Career With German nationality as the daughter of a German businessman, she was born in Switzerland, and resided in Peru for more than 13 years. She was a national champion in Peru at the age of 13, and later moved to Miami, Florida. She dealt with a series of injuries (ear and knee, among others) throughout her career. Amanda Coetzer
Amanda Coetzer (born 22 October 1971, in Hoopstad) is a South African former professional tennis player. Coetzer finished in the WTA rankings top 20 for ten consecutive seasons (1992–2001), peaking at world No. 3. She reached three Grand Slam semifinals (Australian Open 1996 and 1997, French Open 1997) and one Grand Slam doubles final ( US Open 1993). Coetzer earned a reputation for regularly beating players who were ranked higher than her. By virtue of scoring so many upset wins in spite of her five-foot-two (1.58m) stature, she gained the nickname: "The Little Assassin". Sarah Pitkowski-Malcor (born 13 November 1975) is a former professional tennis player from France. Her career-high singles ranking is world No. 29, which she achieved on 1 November 1999. Pitkowski won her only career WTA Tour singles final in Budapest in the spring of 1999, where she beat Cristina Torrens Valero in the final. She was also the runner-up at the WTA tournament in Antwerp in the same year, where she lost to Justine Henin. The 1999 Belgian Open singles was the singles event of the sixth edition of the Belgian Open; a WTA Tier IV tournament and one of the most prestigious women's tennis tournament held in Belgium. The tournament had not occurred since 1993, where it was won by Radka Bobková. She did not compete this year. Karin Kschwendt
Karin Kschwendt (born 14 September 1968) is a former professional tennis player who represented Luxembourg, Germany and Austria at various points in her career. She reached her career-high ranking of world No. 37 on 12 August 1996. In doubles, she went as high as No. 45 in February 1996. Mercedes MarĂa Paz (; born 27 June 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Argentina. She won three singles titles on the WTA Tour and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 28 in April 1991.
