Beledweyne ( so, Beledweyne, ar, بلد وين, it, Belet Uen) is a city in central Somalia. Beledweyne District is the capital city of the Hiran region. The city is situated in the Shebelle Valley riverine near the Ethiopian border, 210 miles (345 km) north of Mogadishu. Beledweyne is divided by the Shebelle River into eastern and western sections. In 2019, Safiya Jimale became the first female mayor in Somalia. History There were battles in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011. In December 2011, the Transitional Federal Government took control of Beledweyne from jihadist group al-Shabaab. Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers and around 3,000 allied Ethiopian Army troops descended on the city, capturing it following several hours of fighting. Battle Of Beledweyne (2011)
In December 2011, Ethiopian forces recaptured the central Somali town of Beledweyne from Al-Shabaab fighters. The Fighting al-Shabbab claimed to have repelled three Ethiopian attacks and then made a "tactical withdrawal". Ethiopian-TFG forces easily captured the town; however, residents still feared that the al-Shabbab would return and fight for the town. Eyewitnesses claimed both sides used heavy artillery and weapons. March 2022 Somalia Attacks
On 23 March 2022 in Somalia, a series of coordinated attacks by al-Shabaab jihadists in the two cities of Mogadishu and Beledweyne killed over 60 people. Background Al-Shabaab are a Somali Islamist group whose insurgency began during the late 2000s. Their attacks have included many in the country's capital Mogadishu, including the deadliest bombing in African history, in October 2017. They have also often attacked Beledweyne, including suicide attacks in June 2009, October and November 2013 and February 2022. February 2022 Beledweyne Bombing
On February 19, 2022, an al-Shabaab suicide bomber killed 14 people at a restaurant in Beledweyne, Somalia. Background The Islamist militant group al-Shabaab – the Somali branch of al-Qaeda – began their insurgency during the 2006–2009 phase of the Somali Civil War. They took part in battles in Beledweyne, Hiran, Hirshabelle State in 2008, 2010 and 2011. In 2009, they carried out a suicide car bombing at a hotel there, killing 57 people. In 2013, they carried out suicide attacks there at a restaurant and a police station. Bombing During the morning of February 19, 2022, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a restaurant in Beledweyene. 2009 Beledweyne Bombing
The Beledweyne bombing was a bombing targeting Medina Hotel killing 57 and injuring 307 others. The attack On June 18, 2009, at around 10:30 am local time, an explosive-ladened Toyota car began to drive to the Medina Hotel. The car bomb was spotted before it reached the entrance of Medina Hotel, Omar Hashi Aden the National Security Minister of Somalia were about to leave the hotel when the car bomb drove through the entrance on the hotel crashing into parked cars before detonating its explosive device. AMISOM
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was a regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations Security Council. It was mandated to support transitional governmental structures, implement a national security plan, train the Somali security forces, and to assist in creating a secure environment for the delivery of humanitarian aid.
