Bee Hive Ski Races
Between 1961 and 1967, a series of annual giant slalom ski races were held in Canada. The races had a large prize pool and attracted the best skiers from around the world. Over 4000 spectators attended the races and the event and results were reported in most newspapers between London ON and Montreal QC at the time. The races were sponsored by the St. Lawrence Starch Company. Georgian Peaks Ski Club
Georgian Peaks is a private alpine ski resort located on the Niagara Escarpment just outside Thornbury, Ontario. It has the highest vertical drop of any resort in Ontario, at 820 feet (250 m), enough to allow it to host official FIS-standard Slalom and Giant Slalom races. The hill focuses on more challenging terrain than nearby hills like Blue Mountain, featuring twenty-two named runs served by four chairlifts. The Club took a direct hit from an F2 tornado during the Central Ontario and GTA Tornado Outbreak, August 20, 2009. The damage was substantial, but the club was fully repaired and operational for opening day. Ernst Hinterseer
Ernst Hinterseer (born 27 February 1932) is a retired alpine skier from Austria. He participated in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, placing sixth in the giant slalom. At the 1960 Winter Olympics he won a gold medal in the slalom, and bronze in the giant slalom. He was only a substitute for the slalom, and was trailing in fifth place after the first leg. Hinterseer won two national titles: in the giant slalom in 1954 and in a combined event in 1956. He became an "Austrian sportsman of the Year 1960" and in 1997 was awarded the "Goldenes Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich" ("Order in gold of merit for services rendered to the Republic of Austria"). Hinterseer was born in a farmer's family. After World War II he started an apprenticeship as a carpenter, but focused on skiing after graduating from school. Skiing is the use of skis to glide on snow. Variations of purpose include basic transport, a recreational activity, or a competitive winter sport.
