''Bed and Breakfast'' is a 1938 British drama film directed by Walter West and starring Daphne Courtney, Barry Lupino and Frank Miller. It depicts the lives of the inhabitants in a boarding house. It was the last appearance of the silent star Mabel Poulton in a feature film as well as the last to be directed by West. Walter West (director)
Walter Alabaster West (9 November 1885 – 3 July 1958) was an English people, English film director and Film producer, producer. He was a partner in the film production company Broadwest Films. Early life Walter West was born in Cookham, Berkshire on 11 September 1885. His early silent films, some of which are in the collection of the BFI National Archive, include ''The Merchant of Venice'' (1915). He owned extensive film studios, one of the largest being the glass studios at Walthamstow, London, purchased from Cunard Films. With George Broadbridge (later Lord Broadbridge), he formed the Broadwest Films Company. Films made by Broadwest were not only shown in the UK but exported internationally, including India, New Zealand, Scandinavia and the US. Daphne R. Courtenay-Hicks (born 28 June 1916), better known as Daphne Courtney, is a South African actress, who performed in B-movie British "quota quickies" during the 1930s and 1940s. She had a supporting role in at least one French film, ''Le battalion du ciel'', directed by Alexander Esway. She also had a stage career, and stage credits include the first British performance of ''The Man Who Came to Dinner'' (17 Nov 1941) – pre-dating its London debut by three weeks – in which she appeared with her husband the Scottish actor Hugh McDermott. Mabel Poulton
Mabel Lilian Poulton (29 July 1901 – 21 December 1994) was an English film actress, popular in Britain during the era of silent films. Career Born in Bethnal Green, London, England, Poulton worked as a stenographer and entered films by chance. Her first role in George Pearson's ''Nothing Else Matters'' (1920) was opposite Betty Balfour, who was also making her debut, and the film was a success. Over the next several years, Poulton was cast in a succession of roles, and usually played feisty or mischievous characters. A petite blonde, she also became well regarded for her fashion style, and was a highly recognisable celebrity. In 1928, she starred in '' The Constant Nymph'' by Adrian Brunel and received excellent reviews for her performance. By the end of the decade, she was considered to be one of Britain's leading screen actresses along with Balfour, and was described by critics as Balfour's only serious rival. Southall Studios
Southall Studios was a film studio located in Southall, Middlesex (now west London) which operated between 1924 and 1958. The studio was constructed on the site of a former aircraft hangar by the silent film director and producer G.B. Samuelson. The original buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1936, but the studio was rebuilt. Following the First World War, the studio was used for feature film production under the overall control of John Grierson. Later, it was used for television programmes such as ''Colonel March of Scotland Yard'' broadcast in 1955 and 1956.
