Bear Tavern is an unincorporated community located within Hopewell Township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The settlement is named for a historic tavern once located there. During the American Revolutionary War, troops led by George Washington crossed the Delaware River at a location west of the settlement, then "trekked inland to the Bear Tavern and turned right, heading southeast toward Trenton". The settlement is today located at the corner of Washington Crossing Pennington Road and Bear Tavern Road. George Washington's Crossing Of The Delaware River
George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River occurred on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, was the first move in a surprise attack organized by George Washington against Hessian forces, which were German auxiliaries aiding the British, in Trenton, New Jersey, on the morning of December 26. Planned in secrecy, Washington led a column of Continental Army troops from today's Bucks County, Pennsylvania across the icy Delaware River to today's Mercer County, New Jersey, in a logistically challenging and dangerous operation. Other planned crossings in support of the operation were either called off or ineffective, but this did not prevent Washington from surprising and defeating the troops of Johann Rall quartered in Trenton. This important role earned it the title of ''Crossroads of the American Revolution''. Not all of the population of New Jersey advocated independence; Governor William Franklin, the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, was a loyalist who supported the Stamp Act. Washington Crossing State Park is a New Jersey state park that is part of Washington's Crossing, a U.S. National Historic Landmark area.
