Bayou Chicot
Bayou Chicot is an unincorporated community in Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is located due north of Ville Platte. About Bayou Chicot is home to Chicot State Park, which features the largest man-made lake in the state. Also in the community is Mountain Bayou Lake Boy Scout Camp, which was established in 1980, and is now a well known camp throughout the states of Louisiana and Texas. History This location was the site of the first Baptist church in the state which was organized west of the Mississippi River. Evangeline Parish (french: Paroisse d'Évangéline) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,984. The parish seat is Ville Platte. History The parish was created out of lands formerly belonging to St. Landry Parish in 1910. The majority of the area was originally settled by French Canadian colonists and former colonial marines (''coureurs de bois'') from such outposts as Fort Toulouse and Fort Kaskaskia and later included 19th-century French-speaking soldiers and immigrant families. The early generations were born in colonial French colonies, which included the enormous Louisiana territory ('Upper and Lower' Louisiana) known as "la Nouvelle France", and later were born under Spanish rule. Ville Platte, Louisiana
Ville Platte is the largest city in, and the parish seat of, Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,430 at the 2010 census, down from 8,145 in 2000. The city's name is of French origin, roughly translating to "flat town", in reference to its relatively flat topography in contrast to the more hilly terrain north of the area. History The area around Ville Platte appears to have been first settled during the last half of the eighteenth century, when Louisiana was under Spanish rule. The earliest record of settlement in the immediate area of Ville Platte was in the 1780s. Popular legend states the founder of Ville Platte was Marcellin Garand, an adjutant major in the Army of the French Empire during the reign of Napoleon. In 1824, Garand obtained one of the first two lots that were platted in what is now Ville Platte, with the second being obtained by a Doctor Robert Windex. Appalousa
The Appalousa (also Opelousa) were an indigenous American people who occupied the area around present-day Opelousas, Louisiana, west of the lower Mississippi River, before European contact in the eighteenth century. At various times in their history, they were associated with the neighboring Atakapa and Chitimacha peoples. The name Opelousa has been thought to have many meanings, but the one most commonly accepted is "Blackleg." The tribe was known for painting or staining their lower legs a dark color. Michel De Birotte, who lived in Louisiana from 1690 to 1734, about forty years of which he spent living among the Indians, said the Appalousa lived just west of two small lakes. This description is thought to apply to Leonard Swamp (east of present-day Opelousas). During the period, this was the westernmost channel of the Mississippi River. Pine Prairie is a village in Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,610 at the 2010 census, up from 1,087 in 2000. Geography Pine Prairie is located north of the center of Evangeline Parish at (30.781882, -92.420852). Louisiana Highway 13 passes through the village, leading north to Turkey Creek and south to Mamou. Ville Platte, the parish seat, is to the southeast. In 1823 the area was the epicenter of an earthquake which was felt throughout the district. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pine Prairie has a total area of , of which , or 0.61%, is water. Pine Prairie Correctional Center is located in the northern part of the village. The village is also home to an ICE detention center where guards pepper sprayed over 100 immigrants for protesting their treatment and which also had an outbreak of mumps.
