Bay Township is one of the twelve townships of Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 1,142 people in the township. Geography Located in the southern part of the county along Sandusky Bay, it borders the following townships: * Erie Township - north * Portage Township - east * Margaretta Township, Erie County - southeast corner, across Sandusky Bay * Riley Township, Sandusky County - south, across Sandusky Bay * Rice Township, Sandusky County - southwest corner, across Sandusky Bay * Salem Township - west A small part of the city of Port Clinton, the county seat of Ottawa County, is located in the northeastern corner of Bay Township. Sandusky Bay
Sandusky Bay is a bay on Lake Erie in northern Ohio, formed at the mouth of the Sandusky River. It was identified as ''Lac Sandouské'' on a 1718 French map, with early variations recorded that suggest the name was derived from Native American languages. The Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge was constructed across it in the 20th century to connect highways in Erie and Ottawa counties. History The bay was known to historic and ancient indigenous peoples, including the Iroquoian-speaking Wyandot who dominated this area (they were called the Huron people by French explorers and colonists). Located in territory claimed by early French explorers, the bay was identified on a 1718 map by Guillaume Delisle as ''Lac Sandouské'' (later anglicized as Lake Sandusky). Portage River (Ohio)
The Portage River branches run northeast from Wood County & north from Hancock County to Pemberville in eastern Wood County, where it becomes one river, then into Sandusky County, and meanders across Ottawa County through Elmore & Oak Harbor before it empties into Lake Erie at what is now Port Clinton. It most likely derives its name from early explorers who were forced to portage or carry their canoes and boats around the river's intermittent shallows and rapids. Port Clinton, Ohio
Port Clinton is a city in and the county seat of Ottawa County, located at the mouth of the Portage River on Lake Erie, about 44 miles east of Toledo. The population was 6,056 at the 2010 census. The city has been nicknamed the "Walleye Capital of the World", due to the productive fishing waters for the species lying offshore in Lake Erie's Western Basin. The annual Walleye Drop on New Year's Eve in downtown Port Clinton reflects this nickname. History Residents established the community in 1828 on the shores of the Portage River and Lake Erie. They named the town after DeWitt Clinton, a governor of New York who was instrumental in creating the Erie Canal, which connected the Midwest along the Great Lakes to the markets of the Hudson River and New York.
