The Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad (F&PM) is a defunct railroad which operated in the U.S. state of Michigan between 1857 and 1899. It was one of the three companies which merged to become the Pere Marquette Railway. Early history The F&PM was chartered on January 22, 1857 as the Flint and Pere Marquette Railway for the purpose of constructing an east-west railway line on a route, for which a federal land grant was offered, from Flint, Michigan to Lake Michigan at Pere Marquette (now Ludington, Michigan). The early promoters of the road were George M. Dewey and E.H. Hazelton of Flint, with Dewey serving as the first president of the F&PM. Construction started in 1859 in East Saginaw. A more energetic management took charge in 1860 when Captain Eber Brock Ward of Detroit, a prominent lumberman, vessel owner, and steel manufacturer, was elected to the presidency of the F&PM. East Saginaw, Michigan
East Saginaw is a defunct city in Saginaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. History Much of the area that later became East Saginaw was granted by treaty to James Reilly, the Métis son of fur trader Stephen V. R. Reilly and his Chippewa wife, Men-aw-cum-ego-qua, considered the Pocahontas of the village. In 1824, the American Fur company erected a log cabin where the Bancroft house now stands and in 1826 it was tenanted by Captain Leon Snay, a celebrated French hunter and trapper. In 1849, Charles W. Grant was the first permanent American settler here and he encouraged the building of the first school-house near Snay's cabin in 1851. There were three major fires in the history of East Saginaw. The first broke out in the kitchen of the Irving house on July 5, 1854 and spread throughout the village, destroying houses, mills, stores, and of lumber. Bay City is a city and county seat of Bay County in the U.S. state of Michigan, located near the base of the Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 34,932, and it is the principal city of the Bay City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Saginaw-Midland-Bay City Combined Statistical Area. The ''Bay City Tribune'' is a newspaper based in Bay City, Texas, covering the Matagorda County area. It publishes twice a week, on Wednesday and Sunday. It is owned by Southern Newspapers. The ''Tribune'' is the second-oldest newspaper in Texas. Established on August 23, 1845 as a weekly, the newspaper moved from Matagorda to Bay City when the location of the county seat was changed in 1894. It was published as both a daily and weekly from 1904–1959, when the weekly ceased publication. The newspaper converted to twice-weekly publication in 2002.
