Bay Area Transit Authority (BATA; ) a public transit agency that serves Grand Traverse County, Michigan, Grand Traverse and Leelanau County, Michigan, Leelanau counties in the US state of Michigan. History BATA was formed February 1, 1985, out of the former Leelanau County transit combined with the Dial-A-Ride service in Traverse City, Michigan. Over the years BATA has changed routes and branding their reputation to riders with technology improvements on buses. BATA launched their Bayline service on June 25, 2018. This is the first high-frequency, east-west connection for the region, with buses every 20 minutes, 7 am – 10 pm, and it is fare-free. Grand Traverse County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the population was 95,238, making it the largest county in Northern Michigan. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is a constitutional government principal department of the US state of Michigan. The primary purpose of MDOT is to maintain the Michigan State Trunkline Highway System which includes all Interstate, US and state highways in Michigan with the exception of the Mackinac Bridge. Other responsibilities that fall under MDOT's mandate include airports, shipping and rail in Michigan. The predecessor to today's MDOT was the Michigan State Highway Department (MSHD) that was formed on July 1, 1905 after a constitutional amendment was approved that year. The first activities of the department were to distribute rewards payments to local units of government for road construction and maintenance. Indian Trails, Inc. is an inter-city bus company based in Owosso, Michigan, with offices in Romulus (in Metro Detroit) and Kalamazoo. History Indian Trails was founded in 1910 in Owosso as the Phillips-Taylor Livery Service, whose main business was transporting cargo to and from Durand Union Station and the surrounding Shiawassee County. Beginning in the 1910s, the company expanded to include intercity offerings, becoming known as the Owosso-Flint Bus Line. and by the 1930s served much of southern Michigan. Many of its buses ran along US 12, known as "the Old Indian Trail." Reflecting this, in 1935, the company took its current name, Indian Trails.
