Bavarian B III
Bavarian B IIIs were steam locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn''). Eight examples were delivered by Maffei in 1852; the remainder came from Hartmann. The machines by Hartmann had great similarity to those of the Class A IV, which were manufactured at the same time. Unlike the Hartmann engines, these locomotives also had a steam dome. This was later added to the Hartmann variants. All the engines had a Crampton boiler with smooth tubes and a Kirchweger condenser. They were equipped with a 3 T 5 tender. Sächsische Maschinenfabrik
The Sächsische Maschinenfabrik in Chemnitz was one of the most important engineering companies in Saxony in the second half of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century. Including its various predecessor businesses, the firm existed from 1837 until its liquidation in 1930, and individual branches of the company taken over by others continued to operate until 1990. The company is closely linked with the name of its founder and long-time manager, Richard Hartmann, whose name formed part of the new company title in 1898: the ''Sächsische Maschinenfabrik vormals Richard Hartmann'' ('Saxon Engineering Factory, formerly Richard Hartmann'). A tender or coal-car (US only) is a special rail vehicle hauled by a steam locomotive containing its fuel (wood, coal, oil or torrefied biomass) and water. Steam locomotives consume large quantities of water compared to the quantity of fuel, so their tenders are necessary to keep them running over long distances. A locomotive that pulls a tender is called a tender locomotive. Locomotives that do not have tenders and carry all their fuel and water on board the locomotive itself are called tank locomotives. A corridor tender is a locomotive tender with a passageway to one side, allowing crew changes on the fly. Maffei (company)
Maffei was a manufacturer of railway locomotives based in Munich, Germany. Established in 1836, it prospered for nearly a century before going bankrupt in 1930 and becoming amalgamated with the firm of Krauss to form Krauss-Maffei. Following another seventy years of prosperity Krauss-Maffei merged with Demag and Mannesmann in 1999, the resulting conglomerate in turn being sold to Siemens AG. Perhaps J. A. Maffei's most famous product was the S3/6 4-6-2 locomotive of 1908. In 1836, Joseph Anton, Ritter von Maffei established the "J. A. Maffei" locomotive works in the English Garden district of Munich. The aim was to make Bavaria competitive in the machine industry. From these small beginnings a world-renowned locomotive works eventually developed. In 1864 they delivered their 500th locomotive. Kirchweger Condenser
The purpose of the Kirchweger condenser (German: ''Kirchweger-Kondensationseinrichtung'' or ''Kirchwegersche Abdampfkondensation'') was to preheat feedwater in a steam locomotive using the exhaust steam from the engine. It was invented in 1850 by Heinrich Kirchweger. A similar system was developed by Rohrbeck. Overview Exhaust steam was extracted from the steam chest and fed through a 100 mm diameter pipe under the locomotive to the tender. There the steam was fed directly into the feedwater, which thus heated up to boiling point. The remaining steam was allowed to escape to atmosphere through a second chimney on the tender. The quantity of steam could be regulated using a cock on the tender. The Rohrbeck system differed in detail from the Kirchweger condenser, in which steam was removed at the blast pipe and led away along the top of the boiler. Crampton Boiler
A Crampton locomotive is a type of steam locomotive designed by Thomas Russell Crampton and built by various firms from 1846. The main British builders were Tulk and Ley and Robert Stephenson and Company. Notable features were a low boiler and large driving wheels. The crux of the Crampton patent was that the single driving axle was placed behind the firebox, so that the driving wheels could be very large.
