Batu (group)
Batu were a British dance music group influenced by Brazilian music. Formed in early 1992, in Brighton, England, and disbanded in late 1994, this group featured Bebeto De Souza, a native of São Paulo, Brazil, as well as the vocals of Sharon Scott. Full members included Chris Franck, Carl Smith, Kevin Alexander, Sharon Scott, Franc O'Shea, Tristan Banks, Bebeto De Souza, Oli Savill, and Patrick Forge. Some of the artists went on to form another Brazilian outfit called Da Lata, spearheaded by Forge and Franck and featuring the vocals of Lilliana Chachian and Nina Miranda. However, before this, many of them contributed to and were a part of several other projects throughout the 1990s. Brighton
Brighton () is a seaside resort and one of the two main areas of the City of Brighton and Hove in the county of East Sussex, England. It is located south of London. Chris Franck
Chris Franck is a German-born English musician, songwriter, record producer, and remixer, best known for his involvement with the bands Batu, Da Lata, Smoke City, and Zeep. He is described as a "multi-instrumentalist". Biography Franck was born in Germany, and has lived in the UK since the age of six. His father is German, his mother is Dutch. Career Franck gained initial success in 1992 in the group Batu, featuring Oli Savill, Franc O'Shea and Tristan Banks, among others. In 1997, the Smoke City single "Underwater Love" debuted on the UK Singles Chart after appearing as part of a Levi's ad campaign in the United Kingdom. Franc O'Shea is a bassist born in Swaziland. He has worked with artists including Steve Howe ( Yes), Lisa Moorish, Mike Lindup (Level 42), Bah Samba, members of Jamiroquai and Beverley Martyn. His playing covers a variety of styles including jazz, Latin, rock, world music and flamenco. Patrick Forge
Patrick Forge (born Ipswich, Suffolk) is a British jazz, jazz-dance and soul music DJ who spent much of the late 1980s and early 1990s DJing alongside Gilles Peterson at the famous Dingwalls club in Camden, North London. In the 1980s, Patrick worked for Reckless Records in London, and joined the pirate radio station Kiss FM, which obtained a legal license in September 1990. He was also a contributor to the cult black music magazine Soul Underground between 1988 and 1990. He is credited with Trevor Wyatt with the compilation of tracks on the Rebirth of Cool Six CD, released in August 1996 by 4th & Broadway (Island Records). Da Lata
Da Lata (meaning "from the tin" in Portuguese) are a British group formed in 1994 by Chris Franck and Patrick Forge. They combine Afro-Brazilian influences with other strands from the melting pot of their native London. Franck and Forge previously worked together with the Brighton-based group Batu before setting up Da Lata as a more studio based project. Franck is the main creative force as songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, whereas Forge, better known as a DJ and broadcaster, is credited as co-producer. They made three albums for Palm Pictures: ''Songs from the Tin'' (2000), ''Serious'' (2003) and a collection of their remix work for other artists, ''Remixes'', which featured their interpretations of songs by Femi Kuti, Luciano, Bebel Gilberto and Sly and Robbie, among others. Nina Miranda
Nina Miranda is a Brazilian-born English singer and songwriter who was a member of English bands Smoke City, Shrift and Zeep. Life and career Miranda was born in Brasília, Distrito Federal. Her mother is the English Liz Thompson-Miranda; Her father is the Brazilian artist Luiz Aquila, who is also a visual artist. The family subsequently lived in both England and France.
