Basketball At The 1976 Summer Olympics
Basketball events at the 1976 Summer Olympics was the ninth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place from July 18 to July 27 at the Centre Étienne Desmarteau and the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Women's basketball was introduced to the Olympic program for the first time at this Games. The United States won the gold against Yugoslavia in the men's tournament, while the Soviet Union won the gold medal against the United States in the women's competition. Medal summary Qualification A single NOC may enter up to one men's team with 12 players and up to one women's team with 12 players. Automatic qualifications were granted to the host country for both events plus the three medal winners from the previous Olympic Games for the men's tournament, and the three first places at the 1975 FIBA World Championship for the women's tournament. John Donohue (basketball)
John Patrick Donohue, M.S.M. posthumous (June 4, 1931 – April 16, 2003) was an American-Canadian basketball coach. Donohue was the head coach of the senior Canadian men's national basketball team for 16 years, and he led them to several international successes. He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame, in 2013. Coaching career Donohue served as a basketball coach for St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School. He then served as the head coach of Power Memorial Academy, from 1959 to 1965. At Power Memorial, Donohue had a career win–loss record of 163–30, including winning 71 straight games with the star center of his team, Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). Donohue's 1963–64 Power Memorial team was named, "The High School Team of The Century". Donohue went on to work as the head coach of the College of the Holy Cross, from 1965 to 1972. Phil Tollestrup
Phil Tollestrup (born October 21, 1949) is a former Olympic basketball player as a member of the Canadian national men's basketball team during the 1970s. Six feet, six inches tall forward, Tollestrup attributes the development of his basketball ability to his being able to practice on a daily basis both at his school gym, where his father was janitor, and at the local cultural centre, which has an open gym. The native of Raymond, Alberta was later a member of his local basketball team which won the provincial youth basketball championship in 1967 and '68. He played college basketball at Brigham Young University, and was a teammate of Cougar and Yugoslav legend Kresimir Cosić. He then played an additional year of college ball with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns where for 1972-3 he was named Male Pronghorn Athlete of the Year and a CIAU All-Canadian. Lars Hansen (basketball)
Lars Erik Hansen (born September 27, 1954) is a former Danish Canadian basketball center in the National Basketball Association for the Seattle SuperSonics. He also was a member of the Cinzano Milano, Eldorado Roma, OAR Ferrol and FC Barcelona Bàsquet in Europe. He played college basketball at the University of Washington. Early years Hansen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1956, two years after his birth, his family settled in Coquitlam, British Columbia. He later became a basketball star at Centennial Secondary School. In 1971, he led the team to the B.C. High School Boys' provincial semifinals, losing to Vancouver College. In 1972, the team won the B.C. Provincial title, while he received AAA Provincial tournament MVP honors for the second straight year and the Vic Andrews Award winner as the B.C. Romel Raffin
Romel Raffin (born April 23, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario) is a three-time Canadian Olympian in men's basketball. A resident of Kitchener, Ontario, Raffin played for Canada at the 1976, 1984, and 1988 Summer Olympics. He was a member of the 1980 team as well which had qualified for the tournament but did not participate due to the Canadian Olympic Committee's decision to boycott the Moscow games. A centre- forward, Raffin played college basketball for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1974 to 1978. He played professionally in Italy for one year and spent another year playing pro in Venezuela, with Cocodrilos de Caracas. In the early 80's Raffin taught physical education, as well as some other courses at Woodman Jr. High in Calgary. Raffin became basketball coach at Central Memorial High School in Calgary in 1989 and the school's athletic director in 1994. Bob Town
Robert Frederick "Bob" Town (born October 4, 1949) was a member of the Canadian men's national basketball team between 1972 and 1976. Canada finished fourth at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Town graduated from Churchill High School. He played college basketball at the University of Manitoba from 1967 and 1972 and was named a CIAU All-Canadian in 1972. As a member of the national team, Town participated in various European tournaments, the World University Games in Moscow, the Pan Am Games, and the Montreal Olympics. Town was a member of the St. Andrews Super Saints which won the Canadian Senior Men's Championship both in 1975 and 1976.
