Basi (giant Panda)
Basi (; 1980 – 13 September 2017) was a female giant panda. Since Jia Jia's death in 2016, she was the oldest living panda in captivity. Basi was the original model of 'Panpan', the mascot for the first Asian games (in China, 1990). She died at 8:50am on September 13, 2017, at the age of 37. Giant Panda
The giant panda (''Ailuropoda melanoleuca''), also known as the panda bear (or simply the panda), is a bear species endemic to China. It is characterised by its bold black-and-white coat and rotund body. The name "giant panda" is sometimes used to distinguish it from the red panda, a neighboring musteloid. Though it belongs to the order Carnivora, the giant panda is a folivore, with bamboo shoots and leaves making up more than 99% of its diet. Giant pandas in the wild occasionally eat other grasses, wild tubers, or even meat in the form of birds, rodents, or carrion. In captivity, they may receive honey, eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges, or bananas along with specially prepared food. Jia Jia (giant Panda)
Jia Jia was a female giant panda who resided at Ocean Park Hong Kong. At the time of her death, she was the oldest giant panda in captivity. Jia Jia was born in the wilderness of Sichuan province and was rescued in Qingchuan County around the age of two. She was housed in Wolong National Nature Reserve before being transferred to Hong Kong in 1999, as a gesture to the territory following the British handover.
